Nagoya: UNESCO Tour to Shiragawago & Takayama
- Marvel at the signature UNESCO world heritage of Shirakawa-go
- Be transported back to the Edo period (1600s) and stroll through Takayama town
- See the last remaining Gassho houses built over 100 years ago
Another place where you can take beautiful photos is Hida no Sato, a collection of reconstructed traditional thatch-roof houses. The houses are spread around a quiet, beautiful park with a central pond. You can enter many of the houses and marvel at the beams and construction techniques. There is also Takayama Shrine and Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine, located a short walk from Sanmachi Suji. Takayama Jinya served as the local administrative offices of the Tokugawa Shogunate that ruled Japan from 1600 to 1868. The compound itself dates back to 1615 and the present buildings date back to 1816. You can tour the rooms and learn about how business was conducted back in the day.
Then you will head to the famous Shirakawa-go for the old gassho-zukuri (thached-roof) style houses that are spotted around this mountain village. Surrounded by rice paddies, you can hear the sounds of insects and birds if you listen. Located in a mountainous region that was cut off from the rest of the world for a long period of time, these villages with their Gassho-style houses subsisted on the cultivation of mulberry trees and the rearing of silkworms. The large houses with their steeply pitched thatched roofs are the only examples of their kind in Japan. Despite economic upheavals, the villages of Ogimachi, Ainokura, and Suganuma are outstanding examples of a traditional way of life perfectly adapted to the environment and people's social and economic circumstances.
