Full description
Starting from Nagano and concluding in the historic city of Kanazawa, this trek takes you to the “Roof of Japan,” through the fabled Snow Walls of the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route. Meet your English-speaking guide at JR Nagano Station at 8:45 am and board a tour bus bound for Chubu Sangaku National Park. Arrive at Ogisawa Station around 10:15 am and prepare for your ascent before boarding the Kanden Tunnel trolley bus – the first of a variety of mountain transports you will utilize to reach the summit.

Make your first stop at the Kurobe Dam. Constructed between 1956 and 1963, this immense structure required the labor of up to 10 million people to complete and is Japan's highest dam. Learn the history behind the dam and how it continues to serve as a source of national pride from your knowledgeable guide. Enjoy the captivating views of the surrounding mountains before starting the next leg of your journey toward the top.

Ascend further on the Tateyama Ropeway, an aerial lift spanning 1700 meters. Reach the final stop of Daikanbo and take a last trolley bus to the final station, Murodo. At 2450 meters, this is Japan's highest station – an isolated outpost in an inhospitable, dramatic landscape. Vast amounts of snow fall on the area each winter making it inaccessible until spring brings warming temperatures and the chance to carve a route through the ice. Rising up to 20 meters on either side, the stunning snow corridor known as the Snow Walls is one of Japan's most iconic sights, dwarfing people and tours buses alike. Take between 1.5–2 hours to explore the area, including time to visit the museum.

At approximately 3 pm, your guide will collect you and begin the simpler journey down the other side of the mountain by first boarding the Tateyama Highland bus headed for Bijodaira. Once at Bijodaira, transfer to the final cable car which will quickly whisk you down to Tateyama Station. From there, hop back on your tour bus and journey toward Kanazawa with the tour scheduled to conclude at JR Kanazawa Station at 6:15 pm.
