Full description
This trip down the Romantic Road, a famous 220 mile route linking some of Bavaria's most exquisite architectural gems, will first take you to the Harburg: one of the oldest, largest and best-preserved castle complexes in southern Germany. This perfectly situated castle was first mentioned in documents of the 11th century and, with its surrounding village, retains the feel of the middle ages. Be enchanted by its historic flair and delve deep into its history.

After visiting the castle, and pausing for coffee, you will drive on through the wondrous scenery of the Nördlinger Ries – the giant depression left by an ancient meteor in the Swabian landscape. Travelling via Dinkelsbühl, with its towers and spires, you will reach Rothenburg, a perfectly restored mediaeval town. Here you will have time for extensive exploration. Meander through the beautiful streets and alleyways, which are full of the charm of past times. Pick up a treasure or two in the boutiques, or have a meal in an exclusive restaurant.

Your return to Munich will take you through the largest hops-growing region in the world, the Hallertau. On this tour you will surely see one of the most beautiful regions of south Germany.

Our tour guide - Monica, was extermely well organised, courteous and enthusiastic. She kept us all well informed about many topics and events associated with different places in our journey - right from Munich to Harburg-Rothenburg and back. She also advised what one could visit on the coming weekdays. Very fortunate that she was our tour guide. Her timely amd knowledgeable commentary throughout the tour kept me engrossed. Now for the tour itself. Tour was pleasant with reasonable time for sightseeing and shopping. Harburg Castle is small but well maintained. Rothenburg is a cosy lil town with very beautiful buildings. Every building is unique. The shops and restaurants were all decked up for the 1st Advent weekend. Cozy and beautiful. Highly recommended.

Overall, I really liked it, however, it was a lot of time spent on the bus and I think that it needs to be made clear that the “romantic road” on the way to the sites is not romantic at all. There are picturesque aspects to it however as the Bavarian countrysides are extraordinary. The tour guides on the bus and at the castle were both very good but the castle was more like a fort than a castle - not very pretty - but the historic aspects were interesting. Would have preferred to have foregone the castle and spent a few more hours in Rothenburg which was really great, but it would have meant a very long bus ride on the way there.

Loved our visit to Harburg Castle, guide did an excellent job. Rothenburg was amazing, such a beautiful charming village. Our guide and bus driver were both very good. A long day but well worth it. If I could make one small complaint it would be that the bus has a transfer over the side windows at the back of the bus and the last 3 rows of seats weren’t able to see properly and certainly couldn’t take any photos.
