Full description
Start your full-day trip from the historical city center of Naples from where you will venture to the Herculaneum ruins. After approximately 40 minutes of driving, the bus will drop you off nearby the main entrance of the ruins. You can enjoy skip-the-line entrance with your voucher, before being able to discover Herculaneum on your own.

Herculaneum was the first archaeological site discovered in the 18th century, and became one of the most famous sites in the world. Nowadays, Herculaneum boasts several landmarks such as the house with the mosaic atrium, the house of the deer, the thermal spas of the forum, the house of the mosaic of Neptune and Amphitrite, which definitely deserves to be visited.

Afterwards you will continue on to Mount Vesuvius, enjoying a drive through a national park that features amazing views of the Bay of Naples. The bus will climb to a height of 1,000 meters, from where you will take a walking path up to the crater where you can admire area views and learn more about local geology from the volcanological guides. Following your Mt. Vesuvius visit, you’ll head back to Naples.

Nice view over Naples, there is not much to see at Vesuvius. Put on sturdy shoes. The ascent is a bit steep and already exhausting for older people. In between there are small kiosks where you can catch your breath. Toilets are only at the entrance and are very dirty.

Great 'must see' locations, more time would have been nice ...

Herculaneum is well worth a visit, the site is much smaller than Pompeii and although the allocated time is 2 hours, to do it justice 3 hours would be better. We didn't get 2 hours, because the bus was late and the skip the line queue was long! Suggest you hire an audio guide or buy a guidebook. There were no free 'English' leaflets on the day we visited which was a bit disappointing. Vesuvius is also well worth a visit, you need to be fit and able to walk uphill for about 30 minutes on loose volcanic stone, and you need good sturdy walking shoes. It provides for a good workout though, I certainly ached after the climb! Note this is not an organised tour. This tour uses the services of a local hop on bus service. The bus transfer from Herculaneum to Vesuvius was packed and people had to stand. The bus was changed enroute, at the wine tasting stop, this was supposed to have been a 30 minute stop, but they only stopped for 15 minutes. No time to buy lunch.

Exciting experience

The tourist company welcomed us in the office, clarified the program, and gave us the vouchers. We travelled by shuttle buses of another local company. There is no guide during the day. Vouchers must be substituted for tickets at entrances. In the case of Vesuvius, this was uncomfortable. The bus stopped near the starting point of Vesuvius's pedestrian ascent, and the ticket office was 200 meters down the road. The parking for buses and taxis is crowded and dangerous for pedestrians. It takes at least an hour and a half to climb to the volcano crater and return. It is possible to return to Naples on a later bus.
