New Zealand's breathtaking fjord is one of the world's top destinations. Rudyard Kipling once described it as the 8th Wonder of the World, and he hadn't even seen it in all the ways available to you! Which of these takes your fancy?
From Mitre Peak to the waterfalls and rainforest, a scenic cruise of the fjord is the best way to capture its magnificence on camera!
Kayak tours are great for exploring the nooks and crannies that bigger boats can't reach. Perfect for seeing dolphins, seals, and even penguins!
Milford Sound is rife with hiking trails for all ability levels, so anyone can discover its mountainous panoramas and lush vegetation for themselves!
Not the cheapest options of course, but light plane and helicopter tours reveal the time-sculpted landscape at its most awe-inspiring!
Milford Sound is arguably the most beautiful place on earth, and that's only above the water! Hire a diving instructor to help reveal the dazzling secrets beneath it!
Peak Season is around the new year when New Zealand's South Island is at its warmest. It never gets hot per se, but if your priority is avoiding the crowds and high prices then go in fall between March and May. Beware though, Milford Sound is one of the wettest inhabited places in the world, and the rain can be freezing in spring and fall, even on warm days!
Be sure to bring a good rain coat and sturdy, waterproof walking boots, even if you're not going on a hike. Remember that rain is part of the experience! Wrap up warm if you're going on a cruise. If you're not, it's worth packing a few extra layers anyway just in case the temperatures drop suddenly.
We recommend that you pack light, but bring a water bottle, protection against the sun, and most importantly, insect repellant. You should probably take your camera too!
- When should I visit?Always open.
- Is it expensive?Ticket prices vary based on the type of activities possible, like kayaking, boating and flying.
- Will I need a guide?A guided tour of the area is a great idea and there are many options and activities available!
- How to get thereMilford Sound is 295km from Queenstown and 121km from Te Anau. It is a 5-hour journey from Queenstown and can be challenging to get to at times, so taking a tour is recommended.
- Additional information
- Be prepared for rapid changes in weather, insects and sun exposure!
- Pack light, but make sure you have water and a couple layers of clothing.
What people are saying about Milford Sound
The Southern Discoveries organised trip was great. picked up from the motel by taxi, great Bus Driver who told us about all the places along the route. stopped at a couple of places for brunch coffee etc which were very clean and fast service. cruise on the Milford sound was terrific and lunch (while some food ran out) was very nice with plenty of variety.
Marcus was a fabulous driver who took time to answer my questions. He has great general knowledge which he shared freely. A good driver too. Thanks Marcus......you're a star!
this was worth every penny, the driver was knowledgeable and gave a great commentary of all the surrounding areas, local tidbits and a bit of humour. The drive was wonderful and getting on the boat and seeing the Milford Sounds in all its spectacular glory was divine. A day full of wonder and seeing the South Island at its very best, we have such an amazing back yard that everyone should see.
You won't regret taking the journey to Milford Sound. My husband and I went in early October 2018, and it was BREATHTAKING. My advice: Dress warm, anticipate rain (bring jackets, warm hat, raincoat, good shoes, etc.) and BRING YOUR CAMERA. The entirety of the bus ride to and from was mesmerizing - couldn't get enough of the scenery! The national park is stunningly majestic and the magnitude of everything surrounding the little road that cuts through it is humbling. The cruise itself is wonderful. If you're dressed warm enough, DO brave the outdoors. It's the best way to experience it - you'll only be there a couple hours, don't waste it! We drank water pouring straight from a glacier, saw seals playing on the rocks, and got some incredible photos of the mountain canyon carved out into the coastline. It's an experience you shouldn't miss! I'd recommend that you call to confirm your reservation - the bus driver didn't recognize our mobile ticket, so we almost weren't allowed on the bus.
Highly recommend this tour company to explore Milford Sound and in particular Sunny - our exceptional bus driver and tour guide made it EXTRA special! Thank you Sunny!
