Our insider tips

Best time to visit?

Peak Season is around the new year when New Zealand's South Island is at its warmest. It never gets hot per se, but if your priority is avoiding the crowds and high prices then go in fall between March and May. Beware though, Milford Sound is one of the wettest inhabited places in the world, and the rain can be freezing in spring and fall, even on warm days!

What to wear?

Be sure to bring a good rain coat and sturdy, waterproof walking boots, even if you're not going on a hike. Remember that rain is part of the experience! Wrap up warm if you're going on a cruise. If you're not, it's worth packing a few extra layers anyway just in case the temperatures drop suddenly.

What to bring?

We recommend that you pack light, but bring a water bottle, protection against the sun, and most importantly, insect repellant. You should probably take your camera too!

Good to know

  • When should I visit?
    Always open.
  • Is it expensive?
Ticket prices vary based on the type of activities possible, like kayaking, boating and flying.
  • Will I need a guide?
A guided tour of the area is a great idea and there are many options and activities available!
  • How to get there
Milford Sound is 295km from Queenstown and 121km from Te Anau. It is a 5-hour journey from Queenstown and can be challenging to get to at times, so taking a tour is recommended.
  • Additional information

    • Be prepared for rapid changes in weather, insects and sun exposure!

    • Pack light, but make sure you have water and a couple layers of clothing.

Sensational. Great flight, pilot and cruise!

Very glad I choose to fly to Milford Sound instead of doing the whole day bus trip. Very efficient operation from pick up to drop off. No waiting around. No over energetic annoying tourism staff trying to oversell the experience. Pilot was great, providing just the right amount of information without being distracting which allowed us to soak in the amazing landscape. Cruise was also great. Beautiful waterfalls, snow capped mountains and plenty of Dolphins and seals coming out to play.

Amazing views during bus ride and boat cruise.

Bus driver was informative and friendly, but tour was supposed to leave at 9:30 am and return to Te Anau at 5:30 pm. Instead we left at 9:50 am and returned to Te Anau at 4:30 pm. We had 3 picturesque stops, and really loved Mirror Lake. However we didn't get to make all the stops as we would have missed the boat ride. Great boat ride - left on time, lots of food options available at a reasonable price. Gorgeous views and a comfortable very enjoyable boat ride.

Fantastic!! The guide Sam was a high point. The Fiord was amazing!

I especially appreciated our guide Sam who was informed and entertaining throughout the trip. He is a safe and careful driver too, which really helped for those of us not used to driving on high mountain roads. I would recommend this trip to anyone visiting Queenstown, as it has been a high point of my trip here. Thanks again to our guide and driver Sam, who did an amazing job.

Great experience guided by an interesting and informative driver.

The bus drive to and from TeAnau to Milford Sound was just as good with a great driver ensuring passengers were well informed. Milford Sound cruise was great but the boat captain could not be heard over the loudspeaker due to poor system and him softly spoken. The scenery was excellent and the boat stopped at various places to give us a close look at various photo points.

Best weather, Cruise was fantastic as the scenery is amazing.

The bus driver was very experienced, informative. There was a family with a baby that kept crying in the bus on the way which made it uncomfortable sometimes. When I mentioned this to the bus driver, he did help. Picnic lunch was a healthy option.
