How many days should you plan for a Marrakech desert tour?

Tours of Marrakech's picturesque desert vary in length from a single afternoon to an adventurous five days. To help you pick the right option, here are some of the best things to do on each.

1 day

Enjoy a camel tour through Marrakech's rural palm groves, race over the dunes on a quad bike, or even do both! Either way, be sure to stop for tea at a traditional Berber village.

2 days

Take in the scenic delights en route to Zagora - among them Aït Benhaddou, an ancient city that has been the backdrop to Hollywood movies from "Lawrence of Arabia" to "Gladiator."

3 days

Trek out to the Sahara's famous windswept dunes at Erg Chebbi or Erg Chigaga, spotting wildlife by day and camping Bedouin-style beneath the stars at night.

4 days

From Aït Benhaddou, detour through Ouarzazate – "Door of the Desert" – and continue over the Atlas Mountains through the historic village of Tamgrout and Irqui National Park.

5 days

Take in all of the above and throw in hikes along the breathtaking Todgha and Dadès Gorges, as well as smaller pleasures like flamingo-watching and traditional music shows!

How much does it cost?

Marrakech desert tours and safaris start at around €50 for an afternoon, with prices reaching closer to €1,000 for all-inclusive day trips lasting four to five days. Discount deals can be found if you book online, but be sure to compare comfort factors like transportation, accommodation, and food, especially for longer tours.

What's the weather like?

Marrakech swelters through hot and humid summers that can reach upwards of 104°F. However, despite the desert landscape, it experiences seasonal rains through its damp and mild winters.

What people are saying about Marrakech

A camel trek through the Sahara - seeing is believing!!!

While it's a bit of a lengthy drive to get to Merzouga, it's absolutely worth it to be able to witness the Sahara dunes at both sunset/sunrise. Camels are also my new favourite way to travel! The campsite is basic but the dinner was hearty, I loved the traditional music and dancing and our Berbere guides couldn't have been more hospitable. My only criticism is that every stop was designed for us to buy something and the restaurants arranged for our lunch stops were expensive and really dirty and substandard. Our driver Mohamed and a tour guide at Ait Benhaddou became very rude and aggressive, actually yelling at us because no one wanted to do the "optional" tour - we all just wanted to wander the site by ourselves but the men were clearly angry that they would miss the commission. I wish it had been a little more relaxing but it did feel like we needed to be "switched on" 24/7.

This trip was amazing! What a wonderful experience.

This trip was fantastic! Such an experience, riding camels in the desert and sleeping under the stars. definitely worth your money :) just keep in mind it is an 8 hour drive both ways (from Marrakech) so if you don’t do well with long car rides maybe this isn’t for you. Also make sure to take motion sickness medicine with you, lots of water, sunglasses and a scarf if you can (to avoid having to buy overpriced ones on the way). The facilities are very good at the camp.

Sahara desert and the night sky, so worth the long drive!

Well organized trio. Our driver Has was very polite, always on time and knowledgeable. The scenery on Atlas mountains, the sand dunes and the stars were our highlights. Only minus point is the meals you get on the way. The restaurant staff were rude, food not very good and there weren't anywhere else to go if you didn't want a set menu. Overall, once in a lifetime trip, amazing!

quite a long trip but a nice sahara experience

- 13 hour trip to get to our campsite arriving at 9pm (that is quite long) - tents were good with private bedroom and shared showers - nice campsite - dinner was OK, breakfast very basic - fantastic starry sky at night - limited nice stops on the route (no berber village for example) - driver drove quite dangerous (one emergency stop and overtaking in turns in the mountains!)
