What people are saying about Kyoto

A unique, authentic and fascinating tour, best experience ever!

From start to finish this excursion was an unforgettable experience. We were late arriving for our tour due to delays in our cruise itinerary but Samurai Joe was extremely accommodating and made sure we had an experience we would never forget. Samurai Joe guided us through the town of Kyoto, stopping off at areas of interest and introducing us to local delicacies, stories and traditions. The respect he commands from the local population is evident and we felt like we were walking with a celebrity. His wise words, in-depth knowledge and brilliant sense of humour ensured we were kept informed and entertained throughout. The highlight was the Samurai demonstration, where my son was coached by Samurai Joe in sword techniques and the art of defence. Watching Samurai Joe perform his precision sword skills was awe-inspiring and we all feel very privelaged to have spent time with this legend. Thank you Samurai Joe for a day we shall never forget.

Great introduction to the culture of Kyoto and Japan by Samurai Jo!

Samurai Jo Okada’s walking tour is a good introduction to the culture and lifestyle of the people of Kyoto and Japan. Starting out from the Kyoto City Hall, we went thru the different shops along Teramachi Dori that showed the different facets of the Japanese lifestyle- from partaking sake, to checking old bookstores and artisanal work and handicrafts, trying out calligraphy, as well as tasting various delicacies from sugary sweets to savory deep fried eats. Of course, we were also treated to a sword exhibition with some of my companions participating. We were also fortunate to go through Kyoto Imperial Palace while being given some careful background information. Samurai Jo’s tour was very much worth our time and money spent, though on second thought, maybe worth more than what we spent overall. Thank you Samurai Jo!

Samurai Joe will make you feel home in the streets of Kyoto!

After a tour with Samurai Joe the streets of Kyoto won't be the same to you. He explains the you the traditions and beliefs of the locals in an entertaining way while being able to try out delicacies, sake and even calligraphy. Be ready, Samurai Joe can crack a joke or two at lightning speed... You will also be able to visit a Shinto and a Buddhist temple and understand the details differences. And of course witness a Samurai displaying his swordmanship skills! You can even try to wield an original katana and cut fruit (Fruit Ninja style) and the bravest of you can have faith in Samurai Joe and let him slice fruit on your belly! He also accompanied us to a local kimono/yukata shop to buy some for the festival. An amazing guy and tour. Must try if you wanna discover Kyoto!

if you are the sort of person who likes individual characters, then i think you will not be disappointed with this tour. Samurai Joe will introduce you to his friends as you stroll down the streets of kyoto, immersing you in a little japanese culture and tradition. With wit as sharp as his sword, Samurai Joe will convey you on a journey from times when the japanese slept in unheated homes on thin mats, to present times, now the japanese sleep in heated homes, still on thin mats. Then if you put that sword into someone's hand, the facial grin becomes indescribable! Thank you for the memories samurai joe

A quirky and enjoyable tour with ‘Samarai Joe’. He is a 91 year old who would put us to shame with his vitality and enthusiasm. No other guide would give a Samarai sword wielding exhibition as part of their tour, with audience participation! Some great tasty treats throughout the tour and some unique shops visited for food and viewing of exclusive Japanese items. It is clear that Joe is held in high esteem within the Kyoto tour industry through his interactions with staff at the venues. Overall, a very good tour.
