What people are saying about Ko Lanta
Good value for money with some very scenic spots and cool snorkeling activities. However the longtail boat ride is rough, noisey and long even in low wind. The initial ride out from salandan pier out to the islands is about an hour, so its strongly advised to take sea-sick pills beforehand, although several people threw up even after taking them...overall fun but quite exhausting!
we had a great day out. while on the boat you could choose to sit close to the motor which was slightly noisy, or at the front of the boat in the sun. The snorkel locations were great, don't forget to go snorkelling at the lunch location as we found that the best we saw for fish, urchins and coral, and there were no other people around. We found we had plenty of time to discover each location, 45 min was more than sufficient. for lunch we had a yummy massaman curry plus vegetables on the side and we enjoyed some pineapple and watermelon for snacks. Part of the fun is having a good group vibe- which we were lucky to have. The tour guide didn't speak amazing english but really this was not a problem at all. The only possible minor downside was that they fed the fish, this means you get to see a lot of fish as they all swim to you, but it might mean you are disturbing the natural balance. That said, we happily took small pieces of pineapple to attract fish.
The tour and staff were overall great. However, in comparison to the amount of time spent snorkeling, in the cave or at the beach, the ride was a little too long and not super comfortable. Highlight was swimming through the cave and ending up in paradise on the other side.
Snorkelling was amazing. The water was crystal clear and there were so many fish! The amount of time at each of the three spots was great. The pickup location for the tour was listed at our hotel but we were actually picked up from the beach in front of the property which was not mentioned anywhere and the crew were upset because of this. The boat ride to Koh Rok was about an hour which was fine except the boat was extremely packed with people making it very uncomfortable. It was hard to hear when things were being announced so were unsure of what to be doing at some points. The island where were had lunch was absolutely packed with other tourist. There were about 20 boats there at lunch that each had about 35 people on them. Plenty of food and it was good. We had a bit of time to relax on the island (and have a nap listening to the waves!)
