Top attractions in Innsbruck
Charming Innsbruck looks as if a child had plucked it from a picture book and placed it here in the region of Tyrol in the Austrian Alps. Its Old Town boasts wonderful attractions reminiscent of a fairytale, set against a striking backdrop of alpine nature.
Though there are many stunning examples of Baroque and Gothic architecture, the Goldenes Dachl (Golden Roof) certainly stands out, with its 2,657 gold-plated copper tiles.
The Giant's Hall is a remarkable highlight in this former Habsburg palace. A painting of Marie Antoinette, the 15th child of Empress Maria Theresia, hangs in the portrait room.
Though Maximilian I, an emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, lies buried in the town of Wiener Neustadt, the Court Church here holds his ornate cenotaph, courtesy of his grandson.
A prominent feature in the old town, the Baroque structure dates to the early 18th century. The interior boasts stunning frescos and stucco work, plus soaring pink marble columns!
Located in the hills above the city, the Spanish Hall in the Lower Castle contains 27 portraits of Tyrolian rulers, while 300 paintings of Habsburg rulers are in the Upper Castle.
Take the city's hybrid funicular to Europe's highest zoo. The park highlights alpine flora and fauna, with 2,000 animals that include bears and lynx, as well as 200 bird species.
The Bergisel Ski Jump affords breathtaking views 820 feet above the city. The location was a venue in the 1964 Winter Olympics and continues to host yearly competitions.
A full four days, including a day at the zoo, will allow you to see Innsbruck's top attractions at a leisurely pace.
Though there is a bus and tram system, exploring Innsbruck's center on your own two feet is the best way to go sightseeing. To reach the Bergisel Ski Jump, take tram line 1 to Stift Wilten, where it's only a few minutes away by foot.
You'll find accommodations within the compact city center, south of the Inn River, making it easy to reach the main attractions. Finding accommodation in a residential area just north of the river is also a viable option and just as convenient for visiting the sights.

What people are saying about Innsbruck
We were picked up from our hotel sharp on the dot at 8:15pm by one of the Tyrolean Dinner Show crew. We were given a very vantage view of the stage. The food was just average but the dissatisfaction was quickly overwhelmed by the wonderfully entertaining dances, music and songs especially the yodelings. I would definitely recommend to all fellow tourists to come to this spectacular traditional dinner dance show.
Easy to book online. Clear what you were buying. Start point could have been clearer... eg white funny shaped roof structure just past Congress building. Stations and cable cars were clean and tidy and suitable for wheelchairs and prams. Views were amazing when the clouds cleared. Food was not over priced. Closing times were clear, but would have n been nice to experience location at night. A very memorable trip, worth the money and would go agin in a heart beat.
Engaged in the first snow of the season. Delighted with the views when the clouds cleared.
The Nordkettebahnen trip is remarkable and highly recommended. Starting at the Congress Station in the Old City - Innsbruck. It takes three legs one by funicular and two by cable car. Winding its way up the pine clad slopes of the Tyrol. On the right days it offers a magnificent view over the city of Innsbruck and beyond. Wonderful!
I was grateful to be picked up near my hotel by a member of the cast to be taken to the show. She was a lovely talented lady as were all the cast members. The show was very enjoyable, a selection of traditional music, songs and dancing. The meal was very good which I enjoyed whilst watching the show. Afterwards they were kind enough to take me back to my hotel which was great.
