Top sights in St. Petersburg
The Hermitage is one of the largest and oldest museums in the world. Its collection is an unparalleled showcase of Russian culture and history as well as the country’s commitment to global art collecting. Don’t get lost figuring out what to see!
This room is one of the few in original 18th-century style. The Duchess of Sutherland wrote, “I have never in my life seen so brilliant a sight,” and, frankly, neither have we.
The Hermitage’s claim to fame is the greatest global collection of Scythian gold. You’ll barely be able to pay attention to the guide when you see these Ancient Greek treasures.
Who knew that Faberge made more than Easter eggs? Find an extensive collection as well as precious historic gems that were gifts to the Russian court.
Discover the history of Russia’s militia housed in the stunning neoclassical General Staffing Building.
The Hermitage’s collection of Eastern ancient and modern art is impressive, but its Western collection really shines—see works by Renoir, Monet, Van Gough, Degas and Picasso.
Both the Gold Room and the Diamond Room are only available with a tour. Purchasing tickets when you buy your day pass at the entrance in the Winter Palace is an option—if any tickets are still available. Unlike the entrance tickets, these ones aren’t sold online. Arrive first thing in the morning or call a number listed on the website as soon as possible.
Unfortunately, you cannot exit and reenter the building. With so much to see, plan for a meal before arriving and light fare or a pastry at the Hermitage café.

What people are saying about Hermitage Museum
OUR TOUR STARTED IN FRONT OF THE HERMITAGE ITSELF BY MEETING OUR APPOINTED TOUR GUIDE MS ALYONA - WE WERE SURPRISED TO LEARN THAT MY WIFE AND I WERE THE ONLY TWO WHO WOULD BE ACCOMPANYING HER - AFTER THE PRELIMINARY INTRODUCTIONS MS ALYONA TOOK US TO THE ENTRANCE OF THE HERMITAGE AND THUS STARTED THE ACTUAL TOUR - IMMEDIATELY WE WERE IN SHE BEGAN EXPLAINING IN VERY GOOD ENGLISH ALL THAT WE SAW - IN SO DOING DEMONSTRATING THE DEPT OF HER KNOWLEDGE OF ALL THAT THERE WAS TO SEE - WE ACCOMPANIED HER AND LISTENED TO HER VARIOUS EXPLANATIONS ON THE MOST IMPORTANT EXHIBITS OF ALL THE COLLECTIONS - THE NUMBER OF EXHIBITS IN THE HERMITAGE IS SO NUMEROUS THAT IT IS SIMPLY IMPOSSIBLE TO VIEW IN ONE VISIT - BUT MS ALYONA DID HER UTMOST TO GIVE US AS MUCH INFORMATION ABOUT ALL THAT WE SAW IN OUR PATH - BEING A CARAVAGGIO AFICIONADO, I ASKED HER IF THERE WAS AT LEAST ONE SUCH PAINTING AND WITHIN THE SPAN OF FIVE MINUTES WE WERE STANDING IN FRONT OF IT - IN SHORT SHE WAS SPLENDID AND WE WERE LUCKY.
This was an excellent tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and made sure the group saw key artworks and state rooms. We all had some problems with accessing the guide's commentary using our own phones with the earpieces provided, but once we abandoned these and simply relied on listening to the guide's voice, the issue was resolved. We were very impressed with the guide's knowledge of art history. We would recommend this tour.
It was very good to skip the line to get in. The guide was very diligent to explain and tried to show as much as she could. While the guide was very patient when other group people showed up 20min late, we were a little annoyed because we were not informed how long she would wait for them. I hope the regulation would be written clearly.
We had a little group that effectivily passed through the Hermitages highlights. Getting information and seeing things that I could have missed if I went on my own. It was an intensive 3 hours that passed very quickly. And after the tour we could then wonder through the other rooms seeing the objects that interested me.
The best tour we have done . Oleg and Mickhail were excellent driver and guide. Oleg the guide was very very good .He clearly loved his job and did exceptionally well. Thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience ,we were looked after from beginning to end. Highly recommended .
