Full description
In one of the twin craters of the Csomád Mountain formed Central Europe's only volcanic lake, the charming Saint Anne Lake. Its surface is about 949-950 meters above sea level, and it is part of the Mohos Nature Reserve. Its charm and appeal for tourists surrounds its roots into the legends which surround it, the beautiful landscape, the healing properties, and the fact that it is also a great place to get in touch with nature and relax.

You can go choose to go boating on the lake, or in summer time you can even swim in it, as the water temperatures reach 24-25 degrees Celsius. The locals believe that if you have a bath in the water, the "fairy of the lake" will protect you for an entire year. Following this, you will take a guided tour in the special nature reserve Mohos Peat-Bog, formed in the other crater of the Csomád Mountain. This is the best place for admiring fantastic plant rarities, carnivorous plants, round-leaved moor grass, and more than 20 types of sphagnaceae. You can also find bog berries, pine, marsh berries, and bog-rosemary from the ice age.

After exploring these natural attractions, you will ride 10 kilometers to the wild and enchanting Balvanyos Resort. Due to the post-volcanic phenomenon, this area is the country of mineral water, baths, and moffets, where one can find a wide variety of waters containing iron, alkaline mineral salts, and even mildly radio-active waters with therapeutic effects. The inhabitants of the area have used these natural resources in curative purposes for hundreds of years. You will begin with a climb up to the Sulphurous Cave, which is the world's most active moffet, emanating more than 4,000 m3 gas daily. On the forest trail you will go down to the Apor bath, where you will find mineral springs with chemical composition considered to be unique in Europe. After a gourmet lunch in the 4-star Grand Hotel Balvanyos, you will visit the surprising Csiszár Bath. Here you will find various natural feet soaks which are very fizzy, like a jacuzzi, due to the continuous gas emanations which are released from below.
