Example of Day Program: Hamburg for Beginners

Experience Hamburg with a city tour departing from the Central Station. Visit sights such as the St. Michael's Church, the largest baroque church in Northern Germany with stunning views from its tower and daily organ concerts at noon. Next, the Grocers' Apartments, i.e. the 17th century apartments for widows, are well worth a visit. Then wander back through the Deichstraße, Hamburg's oldest street, in the direction of the historical Speicherstadt with its fascinating brick architecture. At the Gewürzmuseum you can learn about the processes that go into producing some 50 spices, from cultivation to the finished product.

Hamburg's new large-scale urban project - the HafenCity - is located directly behind the Speicherstadt. High-tech, new media and modern living by the water characterize the "playing field" for architects from around the world, who are given the chance to realize their visions here.

From there, wander on through the HafenCity, past the Messmer Momentum and the Magellan and Marco Polo Terraces. Time permitting, take the opportunity to visit the renovated warehouses, which have been re-opened as museums. For example, view early postwar, racing and sports cars as well as old Porsche models at the new automobile museum. The International Maritime Museum across the street invites you on a journey across 3,000 years of maritime history. Continue your walk in the direction of the inner city and admire the neoclassical Hamburg city hall, which has more rooms than Buckingham Palace.

Great for getting around the city

Allows you to take all public transport and especially all ferries (62 but also 72 and 73) which go everywhere on the Elbe, very practical therefore! Also, you must remember to present the card during the purchase of tickets for visits to sites or museums, it gives the right to discounts.

Tremendous value for public travel alone!

The card allows free public transportation within the greater City of Hamburg, as well as discounts at numerous attractions and activities. My wife and I used the card strictly for free transportation and easily received the value of our card over the course of five days! The city is so well laid out that with this card we were able to leave our car parked for the duration and travelled virtually at all hours of the day and night just by showing our card!

You've got to experience Hamburg.

Whoever'd like to discover Hamburg needs to get the Hamburg Card. It's worth it right from the very first day. A downside we noticed is that the staff in charge of answering questions for travelers coming to the city are 'overworked'. For example, their answers to questions about city tours and/or questions about routes for people getting around on their own. In our case, we couldn't get any help until we asked a subway patroller which S-Bahn we should take to the boat greeting area (the Welcome dock). The same goes for the staff at the A & O Hotel. However, overall the stay was very eventful for everyone who came, and we'll be coming back.
