What people are saying about Gugulethu
What wasn't great was that there was an issue with our tickets the night before. Our driver, Sam, didn't make us aware of the issue until after the township tour and resigned to the fact that we just weren't going to be able to go to Robbens. We were told none of our geoup of 12s tickets were paid for and we would be dropped off at our hotels. That was completely unacceptable to my group of 4. We told Sam we wanted to go to the ticketing office at V&A and discuss our tickets with someone else. After much back and forth, the tickets "magically appeared." We went to the ticketing office. They were unable to accommodate us on our original 1pm ferry and were moved to 3pm. The change in time did effect other plans that we had, which we were not happy about.
Great tour with very interesting insight into history and live nowdays. Great guides, well organized and perfectly on time. We were concerned at first if it is ok to visit townships as a tourist, in order not to be a kin d of poverty-sightseer, but this concernes were all quicly dispelled, we hat the impression that people in townships aprechiate the interest and attention (and of course money) these tours bring and we had a very impressive tour and only plesant encounters in this area. the robben island tour was unfortunately cancelled due to heavy winds, but it was no problem to rescedule or to get a refund.
During the visit at the township local guide not only provided with historical background and facts but also showed a true and real face of township life. Would highly recommend to go for the tour, as only after seeing it you can understand Cape town city and its history fully. Furthermore, people at the township were friendly and made us feel welcomed. Our tour to Robben island was cancelled twice due to bad weather (wind and big waives), therefore, recommend to do it in the morning.
These tours were very enjoyable, very enlightening and gave us a new perspective on both the townships and Robben Island. We came away with a new view on the excellent work being done to improve the lives and conditions in the Townships and huge respect for the people who were held on Robben Island. Nelson Mandela always had our respect but he was not alone and all prisoners on the island deserve the same respect. Congratulations on a very educational tour
If you want to get out of your comfortable hotel, meet a few real South Africans on a personal level and better understand how folks are living in the Townships...then this tour is for you. Sam and his team provide a professional, candid and genuine visit to Langa. We left better understanding the history and daily struggles. Robben Island was also a moving experience that is a testament to the human spirit. We would highly recommend Sam's Cultural Tours.
