Full description
The Accademia Gallery is particularly famous for its sculptures by Michelangelo: the Prisoners, the St.Matthew and, especially, the statue of David.

Admire the 5.17-meter marble statue representing the Biblical hero David, a favored subject in Florentine art. The statue soon came to symbolize the defence of civil liberties embodied in the Republic of Florence, an independent city-state threatened on all sides by more powerful rival states and by the hegemony of the Medici family.

In the adjacent rooms, which were part of two former convents, important works of art are collected here from the Academy of Design, the Academy of Fine Arts and from suppressed convents.

Recently the Gallery has been further enriched by the important collection of old musical instruments from the Cherubini Conservatory, the Department of Musical Instruments.

An amazing almost breathtaking experience on seeing "David"; for the first time. So beautifully sculpted from marble a true work of art and so lifelike and very large .How can one man conceive such an amazing piece of art is incredible. It was a bit confusing getting my tickets, different from the Dome climb set up. I thought the voucher was the tickets, it wasn't. We had to queue up for tickets booked, and then get into the "priority", line. It moved smoothly from therein, but we had no guide to tell us about the Statue or the Galleria itself, which is what I expected. We could have used the Galleria's audio guide but decided against it. Lots of pictures by Renaissance artists, and a lot of statues as well as David, so plenty to see. A good trip all in all. But David is amazing.

Amazing online pre-time slot order and ticket collection option. The instructions are clear, building to collect your actual ticket before your allotted time is easy to find and the different coloured lines are clearly marked. The crowds are controlled well but I went in October so it wasn't too busy.
