Full description
Enjoy the pleasure of sailing in a magnificent place. The Ria Formosa is a salt marsh located in the Algarve in Portugal, which extends through the municipalities of Loulé, Faro, Olhão, Tavira, and Vila Real de Santo António. It covers an area of around 18,400 hectares along 60 kilometers from the river Ancão to the beach of Manta Rota.

In 1978, it was given the status of a Nature Reserve and at the end of 1987, it became an area protected by the status of Natural Park. Most of the area corresponds to the lagoon system of the Ria Formosa, composed of islands and sandy peninsulas arranged parallel to the coast, protecting the lagoon. This cordon is constituted mainly by the Ancão Peninsula, known as the island of Faro, the islands of Barreta or Deserta, Culatra (where  Lighthouse of Sta Maria is located), Armona Island, Tavira, Cabanas, and the Península de Cacela.

The park is the natural habitat of several rare species such as the common cayman, which are the symbol of the park, the flamingo, and the round-winged eagle. Another inhabitant of the park, almost extinct in Europe, is the chameleon. Due to the level of indigenous flora, the area is also of great interest, especially for the vegetation of the dune and marsh areas. The Ria also has huge economic importance due to the variety of fish, shellfish, and bivalves. Go deep inside this ecosystem while enjoying the pleasure of sailing. The skipper can teach and mentor you on how to perform some of the sailing tasks so feel like part of the crew. You can choose your itinerary and there is an option to stop at some of the barrier islands.
