What people are saying about El Calafate
Well organised trip; quality vehicle; safe driver; and large restaurant lunch included. The guide was knowledgeable and it was nice that he joined the group for the walks, even though it said it was self-guided. It's a really good tour if you want to see El Chaltén and only have time for a day-trip. 3 hours driving outward and 2.5 return, so a reasonable amount; but it didn't feel too much given that the weather was clear enough to see Fitz Roy and the other mountains (perhaps it would have been disappointing otherwise). It's might be an overstated to call it a 'hiking tour': it's two nice walks - one 10 minute one 30 minute (one-way). They are nice; but only a shot proportion of the day. Felt a little rushed towards the end of the day. It might have been nice to use another hour to do another short independent walk or in the small town; though in winter this might not have been as easy and getting home before dark may be advisable.
It is amazing to see, yet a long day (which is fully advised in the description, so that is fair). Yet, these descriptions here need to drop the work hike and trek - it is a 2km 30 min walk and slow. Most people on the bus were in basic Nike runners and normal clothes, it is a get on and off bus tour with a short walk in the park at the end. IMO go to Fitzroy and Puerto Moreno, and come back for this in summer and walk the W Trail without a guide, as waste of money, and camp or use the huts.
Inbetween some very expensive tours this one stood out for us. Booked this one as we didn’t want to pay 200 euro p.p. Result; Great 4x4 bus, great guide and during the day we saw all the major highlights of the park. Awesome experience!
Take the bus and then skip the lunch and hike to the ice lake 4km with a picnic and see Fitzroy. The group hike is a walk, bland, and 2km.
