Choosing the Perfect Dubai Desert Safari

These days Dubai might be better known for its jaw-dropping skylines and lavish attractions, but its golden desert remains as unmissable as ever. Here's how to make the most of your safari visit.

Wildlife

Wildlife

With gazelles, wildcats, monitor lizards to be seen, the Dubai desert can match any savannah for wildlife sightings. Try a falconry experience for the ultimate in animal close-ups.

Camel Rides

Camel Rides

Camel rides make for a great hands-on Dubai Desert Tour. Most desert safaris include a short ride, but you can definitely opt for a tour with extended riding time.

Food

Food

Budget safaris (meals included) are available, but it's worth it to spend a little more if possible. You'll get authentic, local cuisine and hospitality that makes you feel like a VIP.

Extreme Thrills

Thrill-seekers are spoilt for choice with the dune-bashing, quad-biking, sand-skiing, and dune-buggy rides offered on various safari tours. Not for the faint-hearted!

Time of Day

Can't handle the heat? Experience the desert by night. The evening tours offer breathtaking beauty and a unique stargazing experience.

Planning Your Visit

What is Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve?

With Dubai's rapid expansion, the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve was founded to protect the natural landscape and endemic wildlife from overspill. It is located in the southeastern corner of the Emirate of Dubai and covers 87 squared miles of land. Some safaris are allowed to take you out to these pristine dunes.

How hot does it get?

Dubai summer temperatures average at 106ºF (41ºC), and often get a lot higher than that. Temperatures are more comfortable between December and March, but you might have to contend with irregular spurts of rain.

Can you camp?

In some places it's possible to camp, but unless you're extremely experienced, we wouldn't recommend it without being accompanied by a knowledgeable guide. Fortunately, there are several overnight camping safaris available.

What is a desert safari?

What can you really expect on a safari tour? More than you may realize! This is your chance to drive over dunes and participate in a variety of traditional desert activities: camel riding, sandboarding, trying shisha, authentic cuisine, henna tattoos, and local entertainment.

What people are saying about Dubai

JOJO was AMAZING, and made this entire excursion 1000x's better

JOJO was prompt and on time for our pick up at our hotel. He made sure we were comfortable and continued to check on us while we rode to pick up the others. We arrived at the Safari destination about a 45min ride from Dubai where the locals draped us with traditional head scarfs to protect us from the sand in our hair and mouth. 1st up was the atv ride which was a really cool guided tour to sand mountains. 2nd was the sandboards that we rode while up in the sand mountains. After sandboarding for about 30-45mins we rode our atv's back to Safari camp. 3rd was the 15min ride to the dinner camp where JOJO added a little dune bashing to our trip which wasnt included but was fun. 4th once arrived we feed the camels which also wasnt included but they allowed us to do so. 5th was the camel ride where JOJO was our personal photographer he did amazing capturing our entire trip. 6th lastly was our dinner with shows which were great. JOJO was AMAZING we really appreciate him. Thanks again JOJO!

Excellent, amazing, once in a lifetime experience!

The tour with Al-Ammar Tours and Hesham (our tour guide) was amazing. Our tour guide was a professional in all respects. He had extensive knowledge of the areas and was an excellent guide. The dune bashing was exhilarating and one of the best experiences I have ever had. The tour ended with a three hour stay at the desert camp in which we enjoyed all of the activities. The food was good also! All in all, this is a MUST DO activity when in Dubai and try and get Hesham from Al-Ammar Tours as your guide.

The sand dunes drive was my favorite--full of excitement!

Great four hour tour and adventure for those who want to have the rest of the day to rest. On the hot summer month of August we required lots of water, which was provided by our tour guide. I would love to revisit this experience but next time in the evening for the sunset pictures. Our tour guide was super friendly!

Jamar was excellent and gave us an amazing afternoon.

Absolutely loved the quad bikes. My children aged 12 and 15 thought it was amazing. The fact you could do what you wanted and didn’t have to follow a guide was excellent. The desert safari with Jamar was brilliant. Sand boarding was fun too, we didn’t do the camels through our own choice x

Very nice trip in family with all desert experience

Very nice trip for families , the driver was very professional , despite of hot, the car experience in dunes was very nice. I didnt put maximum rating becouse the show on camp was short and the meal was not that much good food(very cheap food).
