Choosing the Perfect Dubai Desert Safari

These days Dubai might be better known for its jaw-dropping skylines and lavish attractions, but its golden desert remains as unmissable as ever. Here's how to make the most of your safari visit.

Wildlife

With gazelles, wildcats, monitor lizards to be seen, the Dubai desert can match any savannah for wildlife sightings. Try a falconry experience for the ultimate in animal close-ups.

Camel rides make for a great hands-on Dubai Desert Tour. Most desert safaris include a short ride, but you can definitely opt for a tour with extended riding time.

Planning Your Visit

What is Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve?

With Dubai's rapid expansion, the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve was founded to protect the natural landscape and endemic wildlife from overspill. It is located in the southeastern corner of the Emirate of Dubai and covers 87 squared miles of land. Some safaris are allowed to take you out to these pristine dunes.

How hot does it get?

Dubai summer temperatures average at 106ºF (41ºC), and often get a lot higher than that. Temperatures are more comfortable between December and March, but you might have to contend with irregular spurts of rain.

Can you camp?

In some places it's possible to camp, but unless you're extremely experienced, we wouldn't recommend it without being accompanied by a knowledgeable guide. Fortunately, there are several overnight camping safaris available.

What is a desert safari?

What can you really expect on a safari tour? More than you may realize! This is your chance to drive over dunes and participate in a variety of traditional desert activities: camel riding, sandboarding, trying shisha, authentic cuisine, henna tattoos, and local entertainment.

What people are saying about Dubai

We spent a nice and enjoyable day with Ramdan in the dessert

Our driver Ramdan contacted us via WhatsApp and picked us up in time in front of our hotel. We started to drive to a meeting point, which is like a 45 min. drive. While driving he showed us several spots and answered all of our questions. At the meeting point we've got the possibility to drive with a quad (extra charge). After that the fun of the tour starts. Ramdan lowers the pressure in the tires and then drives through all the red dunes in a row with 15 other land cruisers. We had a lot of fun dashing through all the dunes and really like.it. After 30 mins of pure action, we stopped and spent half an hour in the dunes for taking pictures of the sundown and sand boarding. We continued to drive to the camp, where we got some awesome food (grilled chicken and lamb, vegetables, ...) and drinks, while they did a fire and dance show. Outside you got the possibility to take some selfies with the camels and as well ride them for a few minutes thorough the sands. Thanks for the fun.

Really fun morning out and organised perfectly!

The excursion was great value, and we really enjoyed the experience. Myself and my partner visited back in September; and although the humidity was a lot and the heat increasingly warm we still had a fab morning. The sand on the dunes was incredibly hot, I was unfortunately in sandals, so I would suggest at the hottest periods of the year to wear trainers. The camel ride was fun, the quad biking was also good. You got free reign in a certain area of the dunes, albeit again the heat was scorching and so the quad bike was boiling in places and I had to be careful not to burn myself on the plastic. We also did sand duning in the 4x4s which our driver was excellent and very well skilled at doing this! Overall a fantastic morning of activities, and would definitely recommend!

Once in a lifetime experience with our unique driver Abbas !!

We have just come back from one of the most amazing experiences in my life ! We were group of 7 people, all enjoyed at a maximum level the whole safari tour - dune bashing, sansoarding, camel riding, shows and BBQ dinner at the Camp ! Our driver, Abbas, a great guy with nice sense of humour is one of the best drivers I have ever seen !! We were all highly impressed with his skills, while dune bashing ! He also made a lot of wonderful photos of my daughter, me wife, me, as well as my friend's family !! 5-star service he offered us will deeply remain in our minds and we will definitely book another safari tour when we come back to Dubai! Momchil, Ljuba, Dari, Zdravko, Petya, Dayana ... and especially Krisko !!

Superb tour with a plethora of activities and FOOD!

From the host who picked me up Shihab to the excellent fun I had on this excursion it will be one for the memory books for sure. Great customer service team on OceanAirTravels who assisted me in changing my day to the 4th Oct even though booked 3rd by mistake with under 24hrs remaining. Quad Bike super fun. Sandboarding is really cool to try out, Camel ride was good and the entertainment and food really enjoyable. A tour that is worth it and very much recommend. Once again thank you to Jo and the wonderful Shihab for making me feel valued as a person and taking care of requests and requirements. GO HAVE FUN AND DO IT PEOPLE

Fun filled experience - well worth it in every way.

We had a guide named Hamdy who was absolutely fantastic. Spoke really good English and explained everything in detail right from the start. He made us feel really special and like a VIP. The Red Dunes were unbelievable with lots of photo opportunities and had the chance to snow board the dunes. The Al Khayma Camp was a wonderful experience especially the camal ride as we watching the sun set. We enjoyed BBQ beef and chicken with lots of salads etc and fruit that followed. We could not fault the this activity in any way. Highly recommended as a must do experience when in Dubai.
