Top 5 attractions to see on a Dresden walking tour

Whether led by an expert or on your own self guided walking tour armed only with a tourist map, here are five delightful Dresden highlights to build any sightseeing checklist around!

Pillnitz Castle

Pillnitz Castle

One of Dresden's oldest buildings leads the way in a city of sightseeing treasures. Once the home of electors and kings, its complex of buildings now hosts several museums.

Semperoper

Semperoper

For over 150 years, this magnificent Baroque monument to the arts has hosted opera from German luminaries like Wagner and Strauss.

Zwinger

Zwinger

Don't miss this breathtaking palace commissioned by Augustus the Strong to rival Versailles. You'll probably want a return trip to roam its stately gardens and tour the museums.

Frauenkirche

Frauenkirche

The Church of our Lady was left in ruins by East Germany's post-war leaders. Its reconstruction following German reunification gave rise to a spectacular beacon of peace.

Church of the Holy Cross

Church of the Holy Cross

Incarnations of the Dresden Kreuzkirche date back to the 12th century. If you can, catch a performance by its renowned boys' choir, the Dresdner Kreuzchor.

Planning Your Visit

What about the New Town?

All of the sights mentioned above feature prominently in Dresden Altstadt, or Old Town. The hipper Neustadt is better suited to seeking out cool cafés, bars, restaurants, and boutiques, but that doesn't mean there aren't a few landmarks suitable for walking tours. Our tips? Check out the Still Waters Fountain at Albertplatz and the Japanese Palace.

How do the free tours work?

Visiting Dresden on a shoestring budget? Free walking tours are a great way to see the city for cheap. But remember, your guide does this for a living! Don't forget to bring some cash in order to pay what you think the tour was worth at the end.

What people are saying about Dresden

Very enjoyable and well-informed guide - thank you Susie

The historic city walk in the Left Bank was great and our guide Susie was a real gem. She made several helpful tips for city views from above street level which we followed the next morning - the free Zwinger ramparts walk close to the Meissen ceramic clock chimes and accessed from (unmarked) steps outside, and the panoramic 5€ tower only view from the Royal Palace. We also learnt that Saxons did not come from Saxony nor the Zorb nation... so I'll remember this tour with awesome sights and an excellent, funny, guide

Outstanding tour, much better than expected; more than just Vonnegut..

The guide Danilo was very passionate about Vonnegut, Dresden, WWII history, and the parallels to our world today. He was very knowledgeable on the subjects. Very interactive tour with additional visual aids. Would recommend to anyone. Great value as well, got much more than I expected and opened my mind a bit more. Would've loved to talk more with him over a few beers! Thanks for the experience!

Wonderful Guide. Great Overview of Dresden in a short time

I would strongly recommend this tour as it covers all the key landmarks of Dresden and also covers the important historical events in that perspective. The our guide is very knowledgeble and willing to spend time asnwering all your questions.

Knowledgeable guide who speaks with a local perspective on the city.

Took the Vonnegut Tour - was quite impressed by the tour guide’s depth of knowledge, as well as his varied overview of the city. He provides a lively retelling of the book with respect to various timeframes surrounding the narrative.

A friendly guide who knows how to get you to think!

This tour is a great way to make you think about Dresden in a totally different way than the picturesque old city does. I loved it, and the guide is so friendly and passionate about what he does.
