Full description
Spend a day in the remote wilderness of Doubtful Sound, located in the heart of Fiordland National Park and three times longer than Milford Sound. Self-drive to Manapouri and board a cruise across picturesque Lake Manapouri, followed by a coach trip across Wilmot Pass.

Stop en-route to experience the dense Fiordland rainforest. At Deep Cove, board the Patea Explorer, a purpose-built catamaran, for a 2 hour and 45-minute cruise on Doubtful Sound. You can add-on a pre-ordered picnic lunch at check-out, bring your own lunch, or purchase snacks (cash only) onboard the vessel’s cafes.

See waterfalls, rainforest and mountains during the cruise. You might spot the resident pod of bottlenose dolphins, the colony of fur seals at the mouth of the fiord, or even rare Fiordland crested penguins. During the cruise, knowledgeable nature guides will provide informative commentary.

When it rains in Fiordland, the landscape is dramatic - rock faces stream with waterfalls, mist hangs around the tops of the mountains, and rivers and streams rage.  From a dry comfortable vantage point on board the coach or vessel this landscape is spectacular. Always be prepared to enjoy some rainfall during your visit. Many say you have not seen Fiordland unless you have seen it in the rain!

A real highlight of our trip to New Zealand! The whole trip was extremely well organised from beginning to end. The informative commentary on all stages of the trip, the free tea and coffee on the boat sections of the trip were small details that really added value. The main event though was obviously the scenery, and this was truly magnificent.

We had the advantage of a stellar weather day. Our nature guide told us it was quite rare to have such warm, Calm weather. It would be really difficult to convey in words how luscious the little islands appeared. We spent most of the time outside on the deck and took too many pictures. The deep silence experience was unforgettable. We enjoyed the commentary and the fact that it was not over done.… Leaving us plenty of time to just look and take in the surroundings.

The scenery was spectacular

The company that runs this trip is very organised but I do have a few negatives. With the exception of the coach driver who made our 50 minute overland trip enjoyable we felt like cattle. We could not hear any of the commentary over the speaker and when I asked the captain if he could sharpen up the sound I was told that in certain areas off the boat it was impossible to hear clearly because of people talking or the engine noise. Well we moved a out the boat on our voyage but unless you sit inside, which you planly do not want to do you cannot understand a word he is uttering. Given the amount that people are paying for this trip I think they need to invest in some new technology and upgrade their tanoy system . Shame, I was interested in what information he had to share with us but I I got fed up of trying to listen to someone who sounded like he was giving a commentary with his head in a bucket of water.
