Top sights in Venice
The Doge's Palace, now a famous museum, was once the seat of power of the Venetian Republic. With its ornate Gothic facade, beautifully frescoed interiors, and gilded ceilings, it's a wonder to behold – here are five of its architectural highlights.
Filippo Calendario, the mastermind sculptor and architect, designed the gorgeous columned arcade in the palace's facade and also sculpted many of its marvellous statues.
One of Venice's most famous landmarks, this enclosed bridge was a passageway for convicts leading from the interrogation rooms inside the palace to the prisons across the canal.
Built to impress, this staircase with an opulently gilded stucco ceiling offered visitors a majestic entrance to the Doge's apartments on the upper floor.
Lavishly decorated with ornate ceilings and fireplaces, the Doge's apartments also hold a priceless collection of Renaissance paintings by the likes of Titian and Giovanni Bellini.
Designed to showcase the magnificence of the Republic, this large hall is full of artistic masterpieces, including Paradise by Tintoretto, the largest oil painting in the world.
If you want to make the most of your visit to the Doge's Palace, taking one of the tours is a good idea. Not only is it the best way to discover all about the rich history that ran its course within the walls of the palace, but it also offers access to some otherwise restricted areas. Note that some of the more popular tours may require booking in advance.

What people are saying about Doge's Palace
When I saw the 'priority' queue to Palazzo Ducale I almost had a heart attack, but don't get fooled, it goes quick. I was in within 5 minutes. (It's not so much of a priority queue, more like a pre-booked ticket queue.) I'm not a fan of guided tours, so this was perfect for me! It's also good to know, once you enter Museo Correr, you have straight access to the Bibliotheca and the Archeology Museum too - these 3 are all together.
My experience was most good. I had difficultly locating the local partners to collect the tickets. I ended up been sent to 3 addresses with me bn able to pick up the tickets at the 3rd address. But overall my experience was good. I was able to skip the line at the dodge palace. I look forward to exploring venice more over the next 6 months
Stefano is a terrific guide! He explained the history and architecture relating to St. Mark’s Bacilica and Doge’s Palace in an easy to understand manner and with a strong knowledge foundation. His background as an architect added another positive dimension. The 3 hour tour went quickly. We highly recommend taking it.
Sad for the locals, but wonderful for us to wander round without being hassled by crowds of other tourists. Were able to view all the rooms and paintings in our own time. Missed having the audio guide, though the info in each room helped a bit.
The guide was friendly, well informed and organized. This tour is amazing for people who want to be advised in historical facts about the buildings and life of the people of Venice.
