The Doge's Palace, now a famous museum, was once the seat of power of the Venetian Republic. With its ornate Gothic facade, beautifully frescoed interiors, and gilded ceilings, it's a wonder to behold – here are five of its architectural highlights.
Filippo Calendario, the mastermind sculptor and architect, designed the gorgeous columned arcade in the palace's facade and also sculpted many of its marvellous statues.
One of Venice's most famous landmarks, this enclosed bridge was a passageway for convicts leading from the interrogation rooms inside the palace to the prisons across the canal.
Built to impress, this staircase with an opulently gilded stucco ceiling offered visitors a majestic entrance to the Doge's apartments on the upper floor.
Lavishly decorated with ornate ceilings and fireplaces, the Doge's apartments also hold a priceless collection of Renaissance paintings by the likes of Titian and Giovanni Bellini.
Designed to showcase the magnificence of the Republic, this large hall is full of artistic masterpieces, including Paradise by Tintoretto, the largest oil painting in the world.
If you want to make the most of your visit to the Doge's Palace, taking one of the tours is a good idea. Not only is it the best way to discover all about the rich history that ran its course within the walls of the palace, but it also offers access to some otherwise restricted areas. Note that some of the more popular tours may require booking in advance.

A really good tour with a great guide. Disappointing after a ‘luxury’ speedboat was advertised to find a plain old average water taxi was used. Definitely not luxury as the advertising and ticket guaranteed. We felt misled and particularly as there are some more luxurious water taxis in Venice than the two used in our tour. The first was very average and small which ferried the group to the island to go up the bell tower. The second boat for the remainder of the tour was also not a luxury speedboat. One other disappointing factor was the advertised tour set a maximum of 9 persons but 10 were booked. For the price of this tour what is advertised and promised should be met. A really good tour that could have been great if the boat was as advertised and the stipulated maximum number stuck to.
We were in a group of 25 and our guide Francesca started right on time. She was a very knowledgeable lady who passed on information with humor and a smile. It is a long tour with many steps so perhaps not for any one with trouble climbing 300 year old worn staircases! We were very pleased that we took this tour as we would have missed so much if we had guided ourselves. Bypassing the ticket office alone must have saved 45 mins. It was very emotional walking over the bridge of sighs remembering all the prisoners walking to death. Well done Francesca...you made our visit to your lovely city come to life.
The content of this tour is wonderful. Audio guide is thorough and comprehensive. We were a little surprised that the pre-booking does not not allow quicker acces to the Palace. The staff allow chunks of the three queues (no ticket, pre-paid and groups) through in turn to regulate acces to the Palace and no one que is favoured. Having said this once inside the tour is excellent.
Our guide was very knowledgeable and we thoroughly enjoyed listening to all the information she was giving us. However it says it’s wheelchair accessible- in a way it was but you had to split up from your tour group and go to different areas to get lifts so you missed chucks of the tour as your headset went out of range. Including the bridge of sighs
Although this trip was excellent, unfortunately it was spoilt but 3 small children on a 2 hour coach trip there and back to Venice from Lake Garda screaming and shouting. The trip is NOT suitable for children. Otherwise all very good, tour around Venice and the Lagoon and Gondola ride.
