Experience the best travel stories for yourself! Join a local expert and uncover hidden gems on this Lonely Planet Experience.

Your tour starts at the city’s central station before venturing into what used to be the roughest neighborhood in town. This was the world’s most famous red light district in the 1960s when Denmark was the first country to legalize porn, attracting curious visitors from around the globe.

A few of those original shops still exist today, so no surprise that Vesterbro not only was, but still is, the center of street prostitution in Denmark. In the 1970s and ‘80s, drug addicts, street prostitutes, tattoo shops and shady dive bars dominated the neighborhood. But wandering the streets today, you’ll see first-hand how gentrification can change a place.

You start the tour with a visit to one of the few bars still standing that has not been completely overrun by newcomers to the area. Here, we enjoy a beer in a familiar Danish atmosphere and talk about its importance for the locals who have lived in the neighborhood all their life.

Wander the backstreets before reaching Kødbyen, Copenhagen’s old meatpacking district. Today there are still butchers and other shops that cater to the city’s restaurants, but they live next to stylish restaurants, bars and galleries. Listen to local stories about the area, admire the great functionalistic architecture and hear tales of the people who have worked there.

Continuing the tour, experience one of the city’s amazing parks and its importance to the neighbourhood. Be introduced to one of the local breakfast gems which are a must-try. End the tour at one of the local’s favourite additions to the Copenhagen bar scene for a beer where you’ll be free to roll the dice if their selection gets too overwhelming. Stay as long as you like, or, if you feel like exploring further, your guide will be happy to share dinner recommendations; there are a number of excellent places just around the corner.

We had a great tour. Our guide was Jamshed, he was awesome! He stop quite often along the way to explain about the city and answered all questions we had. Super nice and it doesn't feel like a regular tour. You feel like you are really seeing that part of Copenhagen for what it really is and not what big tour operators want you to see. Would definitely do it again and I highly recommend!

Interesting history, interesting beers

A walking tour is how you should experience the beautiful Vesterbro. We learned alot about the history of the neighbourhood and stopped for beertasting at several pubs which holds important roles in the Copenhagen beer scene. The guide was competent and friendly and was able to point out more intresting pubs, bottle shops, restaurants and scenes based on our preferences.

Interesting tour with Mie from Urban Adventures

A very interesting tour with Urban Adventure Tour Guide Mie. We learned much about the history and the people living at Vesterbro (south of Copenhagen main station). Mie showed us places we would never see by our one. Interesting was the visit at the old pub, former own as a barbery. Thank you, Mie
