Full description
Journey back in time and learn more about the ancient Mayan civilization on 2 individual trips from Cancún. Visit the archaeological sites of Tulum and Cobá on separate days, and get the chance to climb the highest pyramid on the Riviera Maya. Benefit from hotel pick-up and drop off, and complimentary food on both days.

Day 1:
Explore the temples of one of the largest Mayan cities of the Classic Period on a day trip to Cobá. Located approximately 45 kilometers inland from the Caribbean Sea, Cobá is one of the oldest Mayan sites yet found. Upon arrival, you can climb the 42-meter tall Nohoch Mul Pyramid if you are feeling brave, and get stunning views from the top of the largest pyramid on the Yucatán Peninsula.

Translated into Spanish, Cobá means “Water Stirred by the Wind.” From 400 AD to 1100 AD, it was one of the largest cities of the Mayan Classic Period, with approximately 50,000 inhabitants supplied with water from 2 nearby lakes. Learn more about the city as you stroll in the shade of the trees and listen to the sounds of the jungle. Bicycles are also available to rent for visitors at the site. Cool down from the heat in the pristine waters of the Gran Cenote, and snorkel in one of the sinkholes sacred to the Mayan people. Illuminated by natural light through an opening to the underground swimming hole, the cenote reaches a depth of 10 meters for a unique and dramatic experience.

Day 2:
Avoid the heat and crowds on an early morning half-day trip to the ruins of Tulum, and benefit from the services of an archaeologist guide on arrival. Investigate a former port city of the Mayan civilization perched on the cliffs of the Caribbean Sea, and get explanations of the deep background of the site and Mayan culture.

Tulum is one of the most studied archeological sites in Quintana Roo, and thanks to your early access you will get more time to admire its architectural and natural beauty before the large tour groups arrive. Marvel at the emblematic step pyramid of El Castillo, and learn how it was mainly used for religious rituals and as a lighthouse for the merchant ships of the Mayan civilization as they sailed along the coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. Return to Cancún in time for your lunch and to enjoy the beach with a new-found knowledge of the Mayan culture and its history.
