History of the Cristo Redentor

Today the Cristo Redentor ("Christ the Redeemer") statue is the symbol of Rio de Janeiro and Brazil and one of the 7 Wonders of the World, but there was a time when the massive Art Deco rendering of Christ overlooking the city was only a dream of the people.

The Perfect Mountain

The Perfect Mountain

Building a large Christian statue atop the Corcovado (“hunchback” in Portuguese) first became an idea in 1850 as a monument to Princess Isabel, but the project was put on hold.

Statehood

Statehood

Brazil became a republic in 1889, but with the new separation of church and state the idea was abandoned. It would be another 30 years until another proposal.

A Statue for the People

A Statue for the People

In 1920 the giant population of Brazilian Catholics collected signatures and raised donations under the name of "The Catholic Circle of Rio."

Choosing the Image

Choosing the Image

There was much debate: the Christian cross, a statue of Jesus with a globe in his hands... but in the end the Christ opening his arms over the city was chosen as a symbol of peace.

Designing an Icon

Designing an Icon

It was an incredible architectural endeavor designed by local engineer Heitor da Silva Costa, sculpted by France’s Paul Landowski and the face etched by Romania’s Gheorghe Leonida.

felt a bit rushed, not much time to explore sightings

itinerary looks good, but most places (except sambodromo and maracana) were crowded. so not enough time to walk around and see everything. especially on Christ, were so many people, terrible. guide gave us only 30 min, had to go up the stairs, make ur way through hundreds of people trying take selfie, photos etc, and try to have a look around, beautiful panoramic views, and then walk back down. too rushed! there was option for elevator but line for it was going to take 30 min anyways. sugaloaf was good. a bit disappointed about maracana, got to see only main entrance with statue of the team capitain and then drive around in the van, basically didnt see anything. i was expecting we will be able go inside and see ourselves how massive it is inside, but didnt happen. cathedral was good. sambodromo interesting to see, lunch was great at traditional churascaria, choice of food/meat was great. selaron steps again too crowded and didnt had enought time to go all the way up the stairs to see

Very well organized and excellent guided by Sergio!

Originally we had only bought and planned to visit Cristo Redentor and the Sugarloaf mountain. However the weather was not the best to get the most out of those 2 and the guide suggested we started with a tour in the city, I e the Selaron Steps, Maracanã Stadium and some churches/cathedral- very very nice! We had not booked this, it was very easy to adjust the booking and the planning of the day. The guide, Sergio, was very informative the full day and together with the driver they planned the day excellent, adjusted the activities to the weather and we got the best views and very smooth passes in the lines to all activities the full day. Can really recommend the tour as well as the guide, Sergio!

A very informative guide and scenic competent driver for the tour

Pedro(the guide) got his message across in English clearly and understandably, while Alvis(the driver) negotiated the frightening ascent/descent to Christ The Redeemer expertly. I will do the same tour again with the duo if/when I come back to Rio. The particular City tour was money well spent. Dr. Toks Abiose.
