Even if you cannot (October 2019) hike to the crater rim because Mount Etna is too active, the tour gives a very good insight into the world of volcanism. Without a guide, you won't get far from the height to which the all-wheel drive vehicles drive. Therefore, booking a tour is definitely worth it. Our guide (geologist from Catania) gave very interesting geological information and also told a lot while hiking, so that he was able to convey the enthusiasm for volcanoes and seismography very well. Our 14-year-old son was also able to follow the English tour very well and was very impressed by the forces of nature. Unfortunately, there was a bit of a rush at the cable car.

Great and rewarding experience

The hike is pretty nice though a bit demanding. We were lucky enough to have clear skies so we could see as far as Catania. The guide was nice and had some interesting explanations to give though he did not communicate as strongly his passion. The organisation was good, instructions were clear and even reinforced the day prior via a WhatsApp message. They provided shoes free of charge but they were of really poor quality... We accepted them because we thought they'd be better than the ones we had. All in all: Etna hike is really wonderful but the organisation can probably be improved in some areas

Outstanding, a bucket list perfect tick...trekking an active volcano

This was a brilliant experience of the highest quality. It was exactly as described and more. It was an adventure experience with helmets, proper boots that we hired (at no cost!) from the company and this meant we had full confidence in the equipment and the company. They took safety seriously, which enabled us to take on an exciting endeavour without unnecessary risk. We were all of a good fitness , as required by this trek meaning that we felt accomplished afterwards. The explanations by a proper volcanic geologist were interesting and appropriate, providing insight without being overwhelming. The meet-up point was clear and convenient to leave your car. Owing to the early start, a hire car is the best way to get there and amazing views en-route. Although there are hairpin bends, they are not scary as there are no steep drops below, like alpine roads. Overall, a fabulous experience which I couldn't have been happier with , especially the periodic crater smoke billowing up.
