Full description
Traveling is only as deep as the people you interact with, and on this half-day tour, you will get to discover Cape Town in an up-close and personal way through the eyes of the locals. During your time together, you will have a chance to dig deeper into the multicultural side of Cape Town, and hear their personal stories of forceful removals from District Six to the rich cultural landscape of township life. The day either begins at 08.00 or at 13.00, returning approximately four-and-a-half hours later. You will begin in District Six with the Museum (closed Sundays). Here you can educate yourself on the forceful removal of over 60,000 inhabitants in the 1970s by the apartheid regime. This once lively community of former slaves, artisans and merchants was once home to almost 1/10 of the city of Cape Town's population before the brutality that came. After your education, you will move to Langa, the oldest formal township in South Africa. This suburb was established in 1927, and was established specifically for Black Africans before the apartheid era. There is a history of violent uprisings here, and your visit will be benefited with the local's stories and perspectives. From here we move onto Shebeen (township pub) with the option to taste some traditional beer! How can you turn down a beer with the locals? Finally we move to Khayelitsha - the largest and fastest growing township in South Africa today. Its local name is Xhosa, which means New Home. Here you will get to meet with some of the township entrepreneurs who are breathing new life in to these historic towns. If you're fortunate enough to be with us on a Sunday, we'll even have the chance to visit a charismatic church service in the townships! It's truly an experience not to be missed!

Slightly above Average experience. The Guide was a really nice and passionate guy, he helped me understanding what was going on nowadays and how the townships were born. The tour itself was ok, it was quite commercial. They walk you around the township however it lacks a bit of depth in the life of people. Would recommend other people to go to find out what’s really going on in the townships.

Siya was a nice and talkative tour guide.

Enjoyed the tour with Siya. He was nice and talkative and also the person he organised to guide us through Langa answered the questions we had and was helpful. However, the mere fact of going on a Township tour was something quite new and I still don't know how I feel about it. I felt like an intruder in someone's home. Like a voyeur. So, in many ways the tour was eye opening, informative, and for me just a little disturbing.

Great tour; easy and great access to locals

We enjoyed the township tour. It's one thing to go to all the tourists spots. It's another altogether to actually be welcomed into a community and into people's home. We found the tours guides to be nice, knowledgeable and professional. We also enjoyed the fact that it didn't take the whole day and was easy. Highly recommended for the value.
