Full description
Restored in March 2015, Caminito del Rey, formerly a service road, has now become one of the main tourist destinations in the province of Malaga. The tour is guided, which makes a big difference as the guide explains the history and tells many anecdotes, making the journey very exciting and pleasant. The routes are 7.7 km and 10 km long, which make for approximately 3 hours of pure enjoyment in the beautiful Natural Park of the Gaitanes.

The El Caminito de Rey hike is spectacular the whole way from the Count of Guadalhorce Reservoir to its end at El Chorro Dam. Placed in unique natural surroundings, the path stretches between two gorges, canyons, and a large valley, all along pathways or boardwalks. The route is linear, not circular, and it goes in one direction, downwards from the north to the south. Its beginning is in the Town of Ardales and the end in Álora. The route is almost 8 km long, and takes from 3-4 hours to be crossed.

A spectacular walk along safe, easy paths at a slow pace. The walk itself is neither long nor strenuous, with amazing views over the gorge. The construction of the railway line, viaducts, dams and reservoirs are truly remarkable feats of engineering. Information boards along the way explain the history of the area along with its flora and fauna. Although our guide, Amanda, was excellent, the walk could easily be completed independently and more cheaply if more tickets were made available to individuals rather than being allocated to group bookings.

This was a good excursion, but the people that you are with can really make or break the trip. I booked for myself and a friend, but there were a lot of young kids and older couples on the excursion as well and they took FOREVER at the bathrooms (wasting about 30 minutes of the trip), then we kept stopping along the trail for breaks in the shade and we about froze our butts off. It would have been nice to have the option to move forward without the group. I would rate this a 7 out of 10, 10 out of 10 if we had been in the sun more for warmth and if our group hadn't wasted time at the bathrooms.

I’ve now booked organized activities through Get Your Guide since I’ve found them. This particular activity isn’t as difficult as I thought it would be. It was a leisurely couple of miles walk through beautiful scenery. I’ve always wanted to hike El Caminito. The local guide was excellent. At times, I feel like there were too many people with some of the groups catching up with each other but overall a great trip.
