Full description
Embark on a guided tour through one of the most beautiful and symbolic places in Budapest, Matthias Church. Meet your guide in front of the church and then enjoy skip-the-line entry as you head inside this stunning Gothic masterpiece, which dates back to the middle of the 13th century. Learn about why the building is referred to as the Church of Our Lady of Buda, and how it came to be one of Hungary’s most famous and most visited churches.

From your guide, listen to fascinating insight about the church, and how during the Turkish occupation it was turned into a mosque, with its tower functioned as minaret. The church was later renovated with donations from Franz Joseph Emperor of Austria and his wife Queen Elisabeth during the times of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. At the beginning of the 20th century, the last Hungarian king and his wife were crowned here, and in memory of the many coronations the church has held it is also known as the Crowning Cathedral.

Admire the church’s stunningly detailed and elaborate architecture, as well as the glistening sun rays that shine through the 120-year-old windows. Retrace the steps of some of the church’s most distinguished visitors, including Margaret Thatcher, Princess Diana, Japanese Emperor Akihito, and St. John Paul II, as you uncover more stories of its fascinating history such as how it was damaged by bombs during World War II and then restored in the 1950s and 70s. Finally, as you head out of the church, marvel at breathtaking views of Budapest’s skyline from the church’s unique vantage point at the top of the hill.

We had a great experience during the visit to the Matthias church in the company of our guide Beàta. We were only two people on the visit plus the guide Beàta, and the visit was made as stipulated. It was almost an informal visit, and there was a great empathy with the guide. We recommended the experience to others who wanted to know more about the history of this place, as well as appreciate the architectural beauty of the building.

English not optimal so difficult to follow. Not a lot of extra oral info compared to what you can quickly google and read on the plates
