Full description
When your ship docks at Waitangi Wharf, explore the beautiful Bay of Islands and see the best of New Zealand’s spectacular North Island. Travel through the Bay of Islands with your guide and take in some of the top attractions, including Kawakawa and the Kawiti Glowworm Caves. You can explore the Puketi Forest’s rich ecological diversity, sample New Zealand sweet treats at the Makana Chocolate Factory, and gaze out over the Haruru Falls and the Waitangi River. The area is often referred to as "the birthplace of New Zealand", due to the historical events that took place there.
A short scenic drive will take you to the first stop on the tour, the Kawiti Glowworm Caves. Enjoy this mesmerizing glowworm experience, after which you will move on to Kawakawa township. This small town, also known as "Train Town", is home to the famous Hundertwasser-designed public toilets, a definite must-see for those interested in art and design. Later, you'll visit the Puketi Forest. This is a 15,000-hectare forest where you will have the opportunity to see and visit the magnificent Kauri trees.
The next stop is Kerikeri, which has a rich and colorful history and is also where the Makana Chocolate Factory is based. This is a boutique chocolate factory where you can watch the making of chocolates, taste a few samples, and of course shop for some delicious treats. You'll also be able to visit the Kauri workshop next door and purchase some unique crafts and collectables.
Next up, you will visit the famous horseshoe waterfalls. These falls are located in a hidden valley on the beautiful and peaceful Waitangi River, which will give you some wonderful opportunities for photographs.
The last stop of the day is the Waitangi Lookout Loop. This setting gives you a chance to take in stunning views overlooking Waitangi and the Bay of Islands before you head back to the wharf. Alternatively, if your ship's departure time allows, you can be dropped off at Paihia for some additional sightseeing, and can catch the free shuttle bus back to the wharf at Waitangi. Your tour guide will instruct you where to catch the shuttle buses from should you wish to stay in town longer.
