Full description
Enjoy a full-day tour of some of the most beautiful sights in Puglia and Basilicata on this private excursion from Bari.

Following a hotel pick-up in Bari at about 09:30, explore the 2nd most important cruise port in Italy after Venice. Bari pre-dates the Romans, but it was during the Middle Ages that it truly flourished as one of the main slave ports of the Mediterranean.

See old women making handmade pasta, and an array of colorful sights, such as the Petruzzelli Theatre, one of the grandest opera houses in Italy. Visit the Basilica of Saint Nicholas, one of the 4 Palatine churches of Apulia, and home to the relics of Saint Nicholas. Go into the church of St. Mark's of Venice in Bari before a coffee break.

Next, drive to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Matera, an historic town of golden stones and ancient houses. Allegedly founded by the Romans in the 3rd century BC, among the city’s highlights are the Sassi di Matera (Stones of Matera). Explore these unique houses dug into the calcareous rock of the canyon, and occupied for some 20,000 years.

Go to the Romanesque Matera Cathedral atop the highest point of the city and dominated by a rose window of 16 rays. Admire the neighboring Campanile (Bell Tower), and get breathtaking views of some of the Sassi, before your transfer back to Bari at about 16:00.
