7 must-visit sightseeing spots in Bari

Nestled in the heel of Italy's boot is beautiful Bari. This may not be the most famous place for Italian tourism, but therein lies its charm. It has plenty of attractions on offer, while avoiding the packed summer days of bigger Italian hotspots.

Basilica di San Nicola

Basilica di San Nicola

This beautiful church holds worldwide significance, and is a popular pilgrimage for Catholics from across Europe. The Basilica houses many noteworthy religious artworks.

Teatro Petruzzelli

The historic theater, built in 1903, was reconstructed in 2008 after a controversial fire, and is now a grand and popular place to see concerts, opera, and performance in Bari.

Stadio San Nicola

This modern, mixed-use stadium was built for the 1990 World Cup, but is now a permanent home to football team FC Bari. Great if you're wondering what to do with kids in Bari.

Castel Del Monte

Castel Del Monte

Drive an hour out to this beautiful castle, in the middle of a national park. The structure dates back to 1240, offering history and spectacle against a beautiful backdrop.

Trani

Trani

This picturesque fishing port is home to a quaint church museum, tranquil small harbor, and some good, reasonable, local restaurants. Nearby lidos offer wonderful swimming.

Cattedrale di San Sabino

Cattedrale di San Sabino

Located in the old town, in a shady and quiet corner, this looming and impressive Cathedral charges no entry fee, but a small donation, perhaps for lighting a candle, is customary.

Pinacoteca di Bari

This public gallery is dedicated to the art of painting, but also offers museum exhibits. The stately building was once the Government Palace for the region.

Planning Your Bari Visit

Getting around

The beautiful region of Puglia is rising in popularity thanks to lower hotel and food prices than the rest of Italy, without skimping in the beauty or quality. The region is best seen by car, and local hire is cheap, particularly from the airport. Drive between towns, restaurants and lidos to see the best the region has to offer, and eat delicious Puglian food.

What to eat in Puglia

Puglia is famous for its orecchiette pasta (translated to small ears) and olive oil - combine the two with sausage and broccolini and you have the region's most special dish. Polish it off with a glass of delicious Puglian wine, usually served with tiny bread bites, called taralli. Yum!

What people are saying about Bari

Alessia was an excellent guide....highly recommend

Alessia was an excellent guide - we enjoyed the tour with her & would recommend her highly & would take another tour with her. However, the agency could have been more helpful in arranging meeting point. It was extremely difficult to locate the spot in old Bari town & google maps don’t work. We had to ask many people & got frustrated locating meeting point. A more recognisable or obvious meeting point would have been better. Even after talking to the agency on the phone as we were lost she kept insisting we find them....not helpful.

Last minute decision the night before and we were so glad we did it!

We only had a day and two nights scheduled for Bari (but extended to one more night in order to include the beach) so we thought this tour would be a perfect way to see the old city. Our guide, Vlad, was very knowledgeable and personable, and we learned some wonderful little stories about the history of the Bari. Very easy to maneuver since we were only a group of 5, though people were out and about and some caution is obviously required.

Pleasure Bike Tour exploring Beautiful Bari

Our 2 hour bike tour was guided by a young Barese man named Francesco, who speaks perfect English. Together with his indepth knowledge and discriptions of the historical spots, enriched our tour making it more than what we were expecting. We recommend to anyone visiting Bari to begin your stay with this fascinating tour.

A fantastic way to relax and enjoy Old Town with a personal guide!

Extremely friendly and accommodating. When our ship showed up early I feared we'd have to sit and wait to start our tour. The Rickshaw team had no problem re arranging their tours and getting our family on the Rickshaws to start our tour. Our guides Antonio C. and Giorgio were fantastic!

Interesting tour taking in the main Bari attractions

Very good tour guide who met us at the ship, but had to end at the port gate due to regulations. Would not have seen half of the places we stopped at if it wasn’t for this tour. Bari is flat so no worries of uphill pedalling No cycling sagely helmets provided.
