Top 5 things to see on your walking tour of Amsterdam

Amsterdam has a few magnificent sights, but mostly you can expect a charismatic cityscape, eccentric shopping, and a whole load of attractions unlike anything else! Here are five of its biggest draws.

Dam Square

Dam Square

Not only the most important square in the city, but the whole country! Here you'll see the Royal Palace, National Monument, and 15th century Nieuwe Kerk, New Church.

Red Light District

Red Light District

First time in Amsterdam? You might be surprised to find the Red Light District is actually quite civilized! Go during the day to check out historic buildings and quirky shops.

Anne Frank Museum

Anne Frank Museum

There's little to see from outside but huge queues, so if you want to learn about the famous diarist's attempts to evade the Nazis, book a tour with skip-the-line access!

Museum Square

Museum Square

Museumplein boasts three of the best art museums in Europe: the Rijksmuseum, the Stedelijk, and the Van Gogh Museum. They're worth seeing even if you don't enter any of them!

Vondelpark

Vondelpark

Around the corner from Museumplein is one of Amsterdam's most beloved parks. If it's a sunny day, push your aching feet just a little further to end your walking tour here.

Planning Your Visit

How hard is it?

Amsterdam is small and flat, but the labyrinthine layout of the city's canals and narrow streets mean even the shortest of walking tours will last at least two hours (although they're unlikely to last more than three). That said, you'd probably end up walking a lot longer trying to navigate the streets without an expert. The Dutch capital is an easy city to get lost in!

How do the free tours work?

If you're visiting Amsterdam on the cheap then you might choose to opt for a free walking tour. If so, remember your guide does this for a living so bring some cash in order to pay what you think it was worth at the end. Otherwise, be prepared to shuffle away sheepishly!

What people are saying about Amsterdam

Great look into the life of the H-buurt and the impact of street art

Keep in mind that the tour can get postponed if the group is too small. You'll find out most likely on the day which can be an issue if your dates aren't flexible. The tour was great, the guide very knowledgeable, approachable and fun! I had a great time learning about the social background of the neighborhood, the development, and all the information about each street art piece. It's a great alternative tour that gets you exploring a lesser known part of Amsterdam. I'd recommend it!

Nice guided tour through the history of Anne Frank.

The guide provided us with details of the tragic times of WW2. The story of Anne Frank and her supporters was inspiring.
