Top attractions in Zadar
For all its historic buildings, ruins, and eccentric attractions, Zadar is a lively city that rises far above the trappings of your typical Dalmatian tourist destination. Here are the attractions that'll lure you away from its beaches!
Built on top of the old Roman Forum, this Byzantine church incorporates many of the ruins' structural elements. The floor has even been removed so visitors can look down into it!
If you came to Zadar to relax, board a boat south to the island of Ošljak. No crowds, no cars, just rustic fishing villages, cypress-lined hills, and the best seafood restaurants!
This beloved art installation is essentially an instrument played by the waves. At night, the nearby Greeting to the Sun provides a fittingly impressive visual accompaniment.
Established to protect the mountain region's diverse flora and fauna, this UNESCO biological reserve is a hiker's dream, as well as a paradise for birdwatchers!
You may notice how Roman ruins seem to jut out of Zadar's every corner. For a great round-up of Dalmatia's colorful history, head over to Croatia's second-oldest museum.
The city's religious focal point for centuries, this monastery was built around 1221, and was where the Venetians signed away their Dalmatian holdings in 1358's Treaty of Zadar.
The Cathedral of St. Anastasia blends architectural styles from the Byzantine to the Gothic. Climb its bell tower for beautiful views over the city and sea.
If you can, arrive at either end of the tourism season – May/June or September/October – to experience perfect seaside weather without the crowds that come in the peak months.
Zadar has a wide variety of attractions, including an archipelago that's perfect for island-hopping! You could complete your city sightseeing in a weekend, but we recommend taking it slow and relaxing into Mediterranean life. If you do choose to explore the islands, allow at least a week.

What people are saying about Zadar
Great tour with lots of things you get to do in one day: beautiful cove with blue and green water, kayak at sea, jump of cliffs, kayak into an amazing cave and snorkel there - this was one highlight for me, it was an amazing experience. Then lunch (either restaurant or your own food), more kayaking, snorkeling at a shipwreck. At the end - marvelous Shakarun beach. The guides are great guys that adapt to weather conditions and to what costumers want. It's a great tour, but I, as a non confident swimmer maybe enjoyed more the cove, the cave and Shakarun beach, then the actual kayaking, so I would recommend this tour to good swimmers, that are not afraid of being in open sea or be prepared for some anxiety, if you insist on trying something new like I did. They provide life jackets. Nevertheless, I could opt out the second part of kayaking and be dropped at the beach where I had half a magnificent day admiring the perfect beach of Sakarun. My husband enjoyed the full kayaking experience.
This was just what we were looking for. The island you go to is nice and the stop to swim in a secluded bay was fun but it was really about the day relaxing on a sailing boat in the sun. Well worth the few pounds extra to have just me, my girlfriend and 4 other guests, as opposed to the slightly cheaper trip on a big boat crammed full of passengers, with seemingly nowhere to relax. The guide was friendly and informative. Make sure you go to meeting point 1 as our boat wasn't even at the same dock as meeting point 2. Not sure why two meeting points are needed.
We had an amazing day with the guides! Cliff jumping, exploring a stunning cave, snorkelling on a ship wreck and playing a local game were just a few of the highlights. The guides were helpful and encouraging when kayaking. A really nice experience were you can meet like minded people. I went with my partner but I would of definitely been comfortable on my own aswell.
Our Skipper Daniel was an excellent sailor and guide with fluent English and made sure we had the most exciting and memorable day . We will never forget seeing the pod of Dolphins and swimming in azure lake Mir , snorkelling in a blue lagoon and sailing across the most beautiful bay. A brilliant day. Thank you Daniel.
I would highly recommend this service and will consider it for future travels. It enabled us to visit two sites along the way and have no worries about getting there, parking or being tired from the drive. Our driver was really nice and the car was large and clean.
