What people are saying about Ypres
Phillipe was so well informed and brought the details of WWI to life. He had so many really interesting stories and details to keep us entertained the whole day and shared so many fascinating details. He certainly highlighted how much the war impacted on the local Flanders fields towns, farms and cities even up until today. In particular he made much clearer the damage gas weapons had had on the soldiers and how devastating this use of chemical weapons had on its victims and the environment. He emphasised the importance of recognising this inhumane style of fighting as something to remember for future generations. Overall a worthwhile and interesting day and ending with the ceremony of the Last Post was a perfect conclusion. It was a moving experience to be a part of a daily commitment to the lost soldiers whose lives have been remembered every single day for over a century.
My wife and myself booked with Quasimodo tour from Bruges and Phillip was our driver/guide. Phillip has obviously built up a great deal of knowledge about the First World War but he is also sensitive to people’s reasons to go on this trip. My own was my grandfather served in Anson battalion and was there from age 17 onwards , and by going you could sense the awfulness of this war . It is hoped that this is not becoming a tourist venture but an acknowledgement of the sacrifice these people made .
This tour was one of the best parts of my 4 month Europe holiday! Our guide Lucas was amazing, and pulled out all of the stops to help us and get us to the tour after a delayed train and a stressful morning. He catered the tour to our group (made of Australians and Canadians) and you could see his passion about the western front with every piece of information he gave us. Overall, It was really moving and powerful.
Great experience. Took us to multiple locations that the general public could not access. He had plenty of contacts that allowed him to show us various bits of memorabilia connects to the Great War. A very wide range of knowledge was shared from the tour guide. It was great value for money with 9hours of facts and items from the war. The lunch was great and the pub was cosy.
Very informative friendly tour. Philippe included an Irish memorial for us and an American memorial for another person on the tour which was great. Ieper is beautiful and the Menin Gate is amazing. Lunch was very good. I crossed the road to Hooge Cemetery with the spare time from lunch. Highly recommend this tour.
