Full description
Your tour starts with a drive north from Windermere to visit the award-winning Roman Army Museum. There you will be taken on a guided tour of the most important parts of the museum, and will also see a fabulous 3D film that illustrates what life was like for the Roman soldiers stationed on this most northerly outpost of the Roman Empire.

From there you will travel past the iconic location of Sycamore Gap, which is famous for its appearance in the film "Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves". The tour then moves on for a brief stop at Housesteads, a Roman fort perched high up on the side of the wall itself. Your next stop is at Vindolanda, which is an amazing place where excavations have revealed the remains of a large town and Roman fort.

Vindolanda predates the building of the wall, but became an important part of Roman life in the north. You will be taken on a guided walk around the site and will also enter the museum to see some of the artifacts that have been discovered there.

You will then travel on to Steel Rigg, where a short walk will take you to the wall itself as you see it snaking over the amazing geological area known as the Whin Sill. You will later continue onward via other views of the wall before making your way back to Windermere.
