Full description
Arrive at the sacred House that Came Home for an introduction to the history, customs, and culture of the Māori people of Mataatua. Meet the descendants of those who arrived from central Polynesia during the 'main migration' in around 1350 AD, and the people they found here - the original inhabitants of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Participate in a range of ancient rituals and important customary practices that define the Ngāti Awa Māori tribe of Aotearoa New Zealand. Discover, become familiar with, and participate in genuine Māori culture in a warm and welcoming environment. Be guided every step of the way by your Pou Arahi, who will make sure you understand enough to experience the magic and significance of each moment.

Following a guided tour and interactive cultural workshops, the experience concludes with Hiko: Legends Carved in Light, before guests are invited to into the wharekai (dining hall) for a sumptuous feast, comprising a selection of local delicacies and indigenous cuisine.

Finally, experience the Poroporoaki farewell ritual, where guests are presented with a small tāonga (gift) in acknowledgment of the honor they have bestowed on the tribe by traveling great distances to visit the sacred house.
