Full description
Palliser Bay is the most extraordinary coastline in New Zealand. On a perfect-weather day, it sparkles and on a wild-weather day, it is exhilarating. After pickup from Wellington, leave the city behind as you cross the Remutaka Mountain Range.

Make a quick stop in Martinborough before heading to the coast. Your first stop on the coast is the Putangirua Pinnacles for a 90-minute walk up to the lookout and along a dynamic riverbed back to the coast. The pinnacles are a remarkable natural feature that was used as a filming location for the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Learn about Kupe, a great chief of Hawaiki (Tahiti) and early pacific voyager who was first to arrive at these shores. Modern Maori and European settlements provide excellent material for those interested in history. Continue to the famous fishing Village Ngawi to walk among the many bulldozers and then visit a large colony of New Zealand fur seals, and see where the pups learned how to survive in the dangerous marine environment.

Scale 250 steps to the lighthouse at Cape Palliser, and relish in tremendous sweeping views of the bay and beyond. This is the most southern point of the North Island. On a clear day, views of the South Island are breathtaking. On the return to Wellington, stop at Lake Onoke and again in Martinborough with an option to visit one of the boutique pinot-producing wineries before saying goodbye to beautiful Wairarapa.
