What people are saying about Underground Naples
The Naples Underground Tour is definitely a highlight of this city, which boasts plenty to see and do. Our guided tour took us about 40m under the streets of Naples and the Basilica San Paolo D’maggiore. After meandering through the narrow tunnels and seeing how the residents of Naples transformed the caverns and tunnels from a rubbish dump during the 2nd World War, we were treated to a trip to what had previously been used as a local apartment until the remains of an Ancient Roman Theatre were discovered. This part of the tour was a real treat. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the history of both locations and spoke faultless English. One of the best tours we did on this particular cruise.
There is no need to buy a ticket in advance. Just show up and join the chaos. We arrived early and got in the line. There was no no separate line for English or Italian; everyone shows up at the same time. For a while we received no instruction. People kept pushing ahead of us. We finally heard a call for English speaking to stand to the right. The Italian tour went first and then the English. Maybe they counted people, but It didn't seem like it. We had more people on the tour than would fit in certain areas. We did like the tour, but were disappointed that the facility workers did not have their act together. It's not a new tour.
I do recommend the visit because it gives an idea of what exists underground not only in Napoli but in most all ancient cities. The same system is found, for example, in Istanbul, built by the Romans and as I live in the roman countryside, our property is know to have huge Roman underground tufo/water tunnels fir water management.
The tour was excellent and patched together history of Naples from Greek and Roman to WWII and 1989. For the 10€ cost, it’s the best value tour we went on all trip. Great guide and tour that went for the full time - a couple of parts continue after the main underground to explore the Roman Theater.
This ticket got us into both catacombs in Naples with the tour. Both were amazing. It was a little difficult understanding where to meet for the Gaudioso catacombs and we almost missed the tour. I would suggest changing the meeting place to the ticket counter inside the church.
