Full description
Start your tour with 8:30 AM pickup at your accommodation, or in its close vicinity in Taormina and the surrounding area. You will travel in a small group of no more than 8 people for a more intimate and personalized experience.

Drive to Etna South where you will start the ascent, first by cableway and then by off-road vehicles up to 2900/3000 meters. Here you will hike for approximately 45 minutes, walking through deserts of black ashes and extinct craters. Back at 2000 meters, you will be given the proper equipment, such as helmets and torches, to visit one of the striking lava caves of the volcano.

Enjoy a typical Sicilian light lunch with local wine and drinks during the midday break.

Finally, you will admire the Alcantara Gorges created when thick lava flows invaded the bed of the icy river Alcantara, giving rise to geometrically perfect rocks.

We had never seen an active volcano before so we wanted to go up as far as possible so that’s why we selected this tour. Unfortunately despite trying to book it near to the time for a day when we thought the weather forecast was good the trip was curtailed by 100km ph winds at the summit preventing us going above 2000m and even at that level winds were at 70kmph where it was difficult to even stand up at times even. This is of course no ones fault and the tour guide tried really hard to fill the time and the cost of our tour was reduced accordingly which we appreciated. The purpose of mentioning this is that the weather at that height is really pot luck and bears no resemblance to what it is lower down where you are staying. It is this unpredictability and the fact that for us the Alcantara gorge was a bit of a waste of time we have given it 4 stars overall but we could not fault the guide and the tour organisation through etna people which was all excellent.

Perfect mix of getting up to the top via cable car and jeep, with a little walk round the crater but not too much walking. Get to see the gorge and lava caves too. Guide was great (Guiseppe) really helpful and good quality equipment provided. Only negative was lunch was a bit disappointing.
