Full description
After a free pick-up at your hotel in Sorrento, you'll be transferred to the port, where you'll meet your guide and start your day tour to Ischia. Enjoy the ferry ride out to Ischia Island across the placid Tyrrhenian Sea, followed by a guided tour of the island. Make your way through beautiful Mediterranean scenery and take in amazing views, as you see some of the oldest villages on the island.

Upon reaching the town of Forio, you'll have 3 hours to explore the enchanting Mortella Gardens. Built into volcanic rock in 1949 by famous English composer Sir William Walton, La Mortella was the perfect private getaway where Walton could begin work on his opera "Troilus and Cressida."

The lovely Mortella Gardens were created in 1956 by English landscape designer Russell Page. Extending over an area of 16,000 square meters (4 acres), this beautifully landscaped garden with pools and fountains contains thousands of specimens of rare Mediterranean plants from around the world. Sir William Walton died in 1983; Lady Susana still lives at La Mortella.

While enjoying the unique beauty of La Mortella, you'll be able to buy limited snacks and drinks. When your free time is finished, meet your guide and embark on a coach tour of another part of Ischia, before arriving at Ischia Port in time for the 17:30 boat back to Sorrento.

Gardens are beautiful but organization could be better

There was a quite stressful confusion regarding meeting point. When we arrived at the designated spot we found it very busy with many people, many groups and many guides and it wasn't clear from the start where exactly our group should meet or how we would be able to recognize each other. After an hour (!) of going from person to person asking "are you our guide by any chance" we finally by accident found our group, our guide didn't have anything on her which would suggest that she's a tour guide (no sign, no badge or anything similar), basically she looked like any other tourist. The group was just about to board the ship and we realized that they were ready to leave us behind hadn't we found them in the last moment. We were then told off about being late (we arrived 1 hour before) and then it turned out there were no ferry ticket left for us. We boarded the ship as "recommended passengers". Once on bus, the guide tried to charge us again for the entry tickets to the gardens.

Mortella gardens

We were told to be at the port for 9am, but half tour group didn't arrive till 9.30am, the meeting point was incorrect and we were aided by another tour guide, coach, driver and guide were fine, the gardens are divine and so worth a visit. However there was too much time wasted before lunch on scenic photo shots, we were taken to a restaurant for lunch, extra cost, and little choice was given to you if you wanted to or not as the position of the restaurant didn't give you a choice, however it was very good value for money with a beautiful view. Our biggest complaint was that although Get Your Guide says the garden entrance is included we were charged again by the guide, and if you didn't you weren't going to get into the most important part of the trip, so be very aware.

Peasant trip

Despite lots if people ....,well organised , bus driver and Guide worked well to add elements to the tour. Mortella gardens fantastic and lunch almost like a party at our table. Boat part not too good as a few people being unwell in an enclosed downstairs wher most people were asked to sit. Different ferry with opportunity to sit outside required .
