Full description
The day before your hike, meet up with your guide and group for an orientation to prepare for the experience.

Day 1:

Leaving Salento at 6:00 AM in a Jeep, the typical transportation of the coffee region, you will head to Cocora Valley. Starting at an altitude of 2,390 meters, you will enter the forest among the tall wax palm trees. Then, ascend into the High Andean Forest (commonly known as "Cloud Forest") bordering the San José River. Enjoy a cooked lunch at a traditional farm at an altitude of 3,170 meters.

After lunch, continue the ascent through the sub-Páramo ecosystem until you reach the Páramo. Filled with unique flora and wildlife, this ecosystem is native to the Andes and will amaze you with its distinctive diversity. After reaching an altitude of 3,800 meters, start the descent to the accommodation for the night, “La Primavera” farm at 3,700 meters. Here, the wood-burning oven will not only warm you up, but is the key ingredient for a traditional dinner cooked by the farm's owners.

Day 2:

Your second day starts amongst the frailejones of the páramos with spectacular panoramic views of Nevado del Tolima and its surrounding landscape. Make an ascent to the wetlands of the Paramillo del Quindío at 4,200m, the source of the Cardenas River. From this point, you’ll help set up the base camp before starting an ascent to the extinct volcano crater.

The ascent to reach the summit of the Paramillo del Quindio at 4,750m takes approximately 2 hours due to the care needed on steeper sections — sometimes as much as 45 degrees. Depending on weather conditions, the summit offers panoramic views of Santa Isabel and Nevado del Ruiz, two glacial peaks in the north of the national park, plus the Otún Lagoon. Then, make your return to the Finca La Primavera, normally arriving as the sun starts to set around 5:30 PM.

Day 3:

Following a delicious traditional breakfast prepared by your host, start the day heading uphill towards an altitude of 4,000 meters. After an in-depth discussion about the importance and problems facing the Colombian paramos with your guide, the group will start their descent.

This route gives you the opportunity to see the stunning Paramillo del Quindio mountain and the surrounding area of breathtaking natural beauty. Mark the halfway stage of your day by enjoying some hot soup when passing La Argentina Farm before completing the circuit back towards the Cocora Valley.

After taking private transport back to Salento, you will finish the adventure with a celebratory dinner at one of the finest restaurants in town.
