Full description
Starting on Tiber Island, get a look into what is now considered one of the nicest neighbourhoods in Rome. Back in 1555, when the ghetto was first established, it was quite a different situation. Hear the story of how Rome’s Jewish community ended up in the ghetto and the terrible living conditions they endured. You'll pass the monolithic ruins of the Portico d’Ottavia and enter the narrow streets that were once both a prison and a vibrant community. Learn the heartbreaking story of mass deportations during the Second World War.

Crossing the Piazza Mattei, hear the ways that the city’s Jewish population has influenced Roman society through food, commerce and customs. You'll pass some of the city’s most beloved trattorie and bakeries, some of which we’ll point out in case you want to come back later to grab a bite to eat. See homes where many Jewish people lived, many descended from generations that lived in the ghetto before them. Many of these people repopulated the neighbourhood after the wat. Hear stories of their perseverance in the face of extreme odds.
