Full description
Retrace the steps of Rome’s earliest Christians at the city’s Papal Basilicas on this intimate private tour with an expert local guide. Once the foundational sites of Catholicism, the Basilicas are now the legal territory of the Vatican, similar to that of foreign embassies, and span the city’s periphery.

The tour begins at St. John Lateran, the oldest church in Rome, and home to the incredible Lateran Baptistery, which was first opened in 440 AD. Learn about this historic site from your guide, and hear how for many years, the Lateran was the city’s only baptistery for many years.

Continue on to St. Paul Outside the Walls, originally founded by the first Christian Emperor, Constantine, where St. Paul was decapitated. Inside, find the amazing Benedictine Abbey from the 9th century, and a medieval cloister from the 11th century.

Finally, the tour concludes at St. Mary Major, a church built in honor of the miracle of August snow in Rome. Hear about this fascinating tale from your guide as you marvel at the stunning 5th Century mosaics and an ancient Byzantine icon within the church’s walls.
