Full description
Beginning this fascinating journey into the rudiments of art and architecture, enter the Chiesa Nuova - a church with a fascinating history which is the home of the Oratorian order and resting place of St Philip Neri.  Your guide will explain the story behind the church and point out the stunning fescoes and features that make this church a hidden gem of architecture and design.
From there, you will journey back in time to Piazza Navona to learn of the history, stories and intrigue of this world famous square that was used from the Roman Empire onwards.  Learn of it's bloody beginnings and rebirth during the Renaissance and Baroque periods with masters of architecture and sculpture such as Bernini & Borromini shaping its beauty today.
You will also venture into the stunning Church of St Agnes on the square which itself has an amazing history and is often little understood by the tourists who happen to wander in.  Your expert guide will point out the main features and stories of the scene before you and help you understand the enormity of history behind it.
Continuing on, you will then venture into the homely French Church of St Louis of France where, hidden in the corner of one of the transepts, you will stumble upon the extremely moving tryptich of masterpieces by Carravaggio.  You will learn about the fascinating life of this troubled master which will throw light on this dark artist and his revolutionary skill using lights and darks in his paintings.
Just around the corner from there, your guide will lead you to a jaw dropping example of architecture and ingenuity - the Pantheon.  Written words dont do this structure justice and it must be seen to be truly appreciated.  The dome and the structure have withstood the bombardment of time for millenia since time immemorial and this fact coupled with it's amazing history and design make it a favorite among locals.
Slightly above the Pantheon, you will then venture into another of Rome's most beautiful attractions and one that is totally overlooked by 95% of the tourists to Rome.  The Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva is unlike any other church in Rome with its surprising decoration and gothic style.  This church is also the final resting place of the great St Catherine of Siena and also the significant artist Blessed Br Angelico.
Finally, you will finish your tour through the beauty of holy art and architecture with a tour of the huge church of St Ignatius of Loyola affectionately known as the Gesù which is the mother church of the Jesuit order.  Marvel at the frescoed ceiling and appreciate the amazing features of design and aesthetic that make the building as well as it's contents, a masterpiece.
