  • Discover the Small and Big Fortress of Theresienstadt
  • Visit the Jewish Ghetto Museum
  • Watch the film "History of Terezin" in English (optional)
  • Go to the National Jewish Cemetery
Full description
Terezin was originally a military fortress built in the 18th century by Emperor Josef II, but it is more closely tied to World War II. The walled garrison town of Terezin (the Large Fortress) served as a holding camp for Jews from all over Europe and was exploited for Nazi propaganda purposes during a Red Cross visit in 1944. The lesser-known Small Fortress was a shockingly inhumane prison run by the Reich’s secret police — the Gestapo.

During the comfortable bus ride, your guide will share insight into the events leading up to World War II and the Holocaust. The tour starts with the museum located in the Large Fortress, formerly an all-boys school, which details the personal experiences of prisoners held here. You'll also view an authentic propaganda film before moving on to the cemetery and crematorium.

Next, cross the river and tour the horrifying conditions for prisoners held in the Large Fortress, from the cell of Archduke Franz Ferdinand’s assassin to the cramped quarters and firing squads of the Holocaust era. This trip provides a powerful, personal look into some of the darkest moments in history but also highlights the strength and resilience of the faith maintained by its inhabitants.

Very impressive. Great local guide who told a lot about the history of the propaganda camp and all the horrors that took place there. The ghetto museum is also an absolute must. The guide from Prague to Therezin was less, also because there were 4 Spaniards in the group and she always switched to Spanish. Her English was poor and hard to understand.

The visit to the small fortress was very interesting thanks to the on-site guide Véronika, very competent and who spoke impeccable French. She explained us so well the life of the camp that the film in English was not even useful. The visit to the museum of the great fortress and the crematorium closed this half-day in a very moving way. Thanks also to Anna, the bus guide, for her very enriching explanations.

Great tour. So sad the history of the Czech people but very eye opening. More time at the places would of been good but got the overall just of the place. The young man who showed us around the camp was very helpful and had great English. The bus ride had both English and Spanish translations which all in all was sweet as!
