Full description
Naoshima Island, referred to as Art Island, is a small island located in the Seto Inland Sea. This island is full of culture; as you explore, you will see pieces from internationally-renowned modern artists and architects such as Yayoi Kusama, Tadao Ando, and Ufan Lee. Begin the tour with a ferry ride from Uno Ferry Port.

The world-famous Yayoi Kusama's pumpkin will welcome you at the Miyanoura port. Grab your rental bicycle or hop on the bus and begin your tour of the island. There are three museums in Naoshima, Chichu Museum, Lee Ufan Museum, and Benesse House Museum — you will have chance to visit them all.

The museums are designed to fit into the natural context; galleries and outdoor art works are scattered all over the island, making the island itself into a huge art space. Time seems to pass slowly in this extraordinary space which combines nature and contemporary art.

The Chichu Art Museum was constructed in 2004 as a site which rethinks the relationship between nature and people. The Lee Ufan Museum is the product of a collaboration between internationally-acclaimed artist Lee Ufan and architect Tadao Ando. Lee's works resonate with Ando's architecture, giving visitors an impression of both stillness and dynamism.

Benesse House Museum opened in 1992 as a facility integrating a museum with a hotel, based on the concept of "coexistence of nature, art and architecture." Designed by Tadao Ando, the facility is built on high ground overlooking the Seto Inland Sea and features large apertures which open up the interior to the splendid natural surroundings.
