What people are saying about Normandy
even with the hundreds of visitors crammed into one commercial lane of shops selling ghastly souvenirs, you can still sense the great history of the Monte Saint Michael in the sea and the land around it, in the architecture and the enormity of building the abbey. imagine a religious community living on a rock, cut off when tide is high, you have to admire their tenacity to pray, negotiate, and live together. extraordinary interiors, and what looked like gigantic fire places impressed me, i was lucky to see two monks, also there was a sad melancholy about them, i wonder how do they feel to offer prayers to their god while hundreds of people like me meander around the pews, taking snapshots. the spectacular views, the dramatic cloud formations reflected in the sea was enough for me to never forget my visit. I paid for my entry ticket on line with GetYourGuide, yet on the day I arrived it was heritage day so everything was for free, the shuttle included.
We travelled by bus from Paris for 4 hours, stopping once along the way for refreshments. The bus was comfortable and left Paris on time. Watching the countryside and seeing Saint Michel rise up from the horizon was awesome. The only drawback of this tour is that Saint Michel is so crowded that you have to push your way through the only entrance gate and once you get in, the crowds are shoulder to shoulder. It was so crowded that we did not even make it to the Abbey because of all of the pushing and shoving. We were able to walk along the wall for great views and to have a lovely luncheon before we climbed back aboard the bus for the 4 hour trip back to Paris. 4 hours on the bus, 4 hours at Saint Michel, and 4 hours back. The tour guides were helpful, knowledgeable, and accommodating. They could not have done anything any better for this tour.
Although it was a short visit, I enjoyed the atmosphere of this very extraordinary place, which made me to hope find any next chance to visit Mon Sain-Michel again for a rather long stay. One thing I was a bit disappointed is about the audio guide for the self-guided tour. It was a nice "advanced" tool which recognized the signs on the guide map they provided, so we would be able to hear the guidance with the least confusion. But, I lost the guide map at the very early stage of my tour. It was my fault, but I could not use it anymore. There was no other way to play the guidance. So, I recommend you to ask for another "spare" guide map just in case, if you choose the self-guided tour.
Quite busy in the morning. Preferably arrive there around noon. Very impressive but you have to be aware of the hundreds of steps that take you to the top. It's worth doing it but prepare mentally that especially on hot days it can get quite exhausting. Beautiful views on top and special atmosphere in the abbey.
It saved time. It was easy to purchase. However when we arrived to the Abbey we could not open the site as the Internet was not getting to my telephone. However when we went inside to inform the staff the young man checking the tickets was brilliant and extremely understanding and helpful. He Thank you
