Full description
Discover the best of Nagano on this 3-day tour where you will see the world-famous Jigokudani snow monkeys and some of the best walking trails the region has to offer.

Day 1
Departing from Nagano station in the morning, head to Zenko-ji, a registered national treasure and the most important cultural site in Nagano. Enjoy a guided tour of the temple followed by some free time to explore the surrounding precinct of smaller temples and shops by yourself before heading for lunch. Enjoy a delicious meal showcasing the best of Nagano's food culture, from sushi to hotpot and Nagano-style chicken, served with traditional Japanese sake.

After lunch, head to the Snow Monkey Park where you can get up close and personal with the only troop of monkeys in the entire world known to bathe in hot springs. Learn more about these curious creatures from your guide and observe them in close proximity before returning to Nagano City where you will be dropped off at your hotel for the night.

Day 2
After breakfast at your accommodation, begin your journey toward the beautiful Kiso Valley and your first stop on the Nakasendo Trail, the historic post town of Narai. Explore this beautifully preserved town and its numerous shops, restaurants, traditional accommodation, and picturesque homes.

On your first walk of the day, trek through a forested hinterland and onto Ochiai. Taking most people 1 hour to walk, this section of the trail includes some steeper climbs making it one of the least traveled sections of the trail. Descend into Ochiai where you will stop for a well-deserved rest and chance to explore this pleasant little town. Afterwards, catch the bus to your destination for the night, Magome.

Day 3
Meet your guide after breakfast for a tour of Magome. Enjoy a stroll along the broad stone walkway lined with museums, traditional stores, and restaurants. At around 10:30, start your second days walking, a longer but more gentle 8.4-kilometer trail.

Journey through an undulating landscape of rice paddies, farm fields, streams, forests and even some waterfalls on this 2.5-hour walk. As the forest thins and the landscape opens up, arrive in Tsumago. Break for a well-deserved lunch followed by time to explore before heading back to Nagano.
