Full description
The famed medina of Marrakech is a shopper’s paradise, but with literally thousands of shops packed into a maze of small alleyways it can be an overwhelming experience.

To help you make the most of the medina, your guide will lead you to the best shops, where local artisans make and sell unique authentic wares. Meet with artists who are specialists in their fields and learn about their family businesses and their work, and feel their passion for what they do.

At the start of the 3.5-hour tour you’ll be asked about items you’re most interested in finding, and your guide will create a customized itinerary that best suits the group. You’ll visit at least 5 artisans, which could include:

• A local leather shop where you can find Moroccan-style carpet bags, leather handbags, and jackets
• A jeweler specializing in silver and beadwork from the far reaches of Morocco
• A local herbalist offering a variety of spices and argan oil
• The tour provider’s favorite carpet shop, which offers fixed prices (a rarity in Morocco) and even a special discount for tour participants
• A local artisan that makes his own range of leather shoes, including Moroccan slippers, and who can also custom-make shoes for you within 48 hours
• Exclusive access to a wholesaler of homewares/souvenirs deep in the medina
• Ladies’ fashion outlets, including a caftan shop and a silk scarf vendor
• A wondrous lamp shop specializing in high-quality filigree
• A veritable Aladdin’s cave of locally sourced homewares and furniture frequented by local riad owners and Hollywood movie stars

You’ll also receive a shopping map, so that even after the tour ends, you can seek out some of the best secret shops during your stay in Marrakech.

As you browse the shops, your guide will teach you the art of bargaining. Learning a few key Arabic words and phrases can make a big difference during your shopping adventures!

Along the way, you’ll also visit a few street workshops, where local craftsmen practice their trades. Watch a master ceramic tile-maker at work and stop at a filigree workshop, where the famous Moroccan lamps are created.

You’ll finish off the afternoon with a rest stop at the delightful Henna Café, where you’ll get to try local sweets and Berber tea. Best of all, it’s food for a good purpose, as proceeds from the commissions of your tour go to a local women’s project jointly funded by Urban Adventures and Henna Café.

Important information
Know before you go
Dress standard: Morocco is considered by many to be a liberal Muslim country. For example, many Moroccan women do not wear headscarves, but you may still find that Morocco is very conservative compared to what you’re used to at home. Therefore, please dress accordingly. As a general guideline, your shoulders, chest, and knees should be covered at all times. It is not a good idea to wear shorts (both men and women) or low-cut tops, or to show your midriff. Lightweight sleeved shirts, trousers, and skirts are respectful and will keep you cool in the heat.

Children between the ages of 6 and 11 inclusively are permitted on this tour. Please select Child above when booking. Children below the age of 6 are not permitted on the tour.

Perfectly organized

The guide was very nice - there were three of us in the group. We saw parts of the souks where there were no tourists and the guide showed us very nice shops for the things we wanted to buy. I bought a very nice Moroccan tea service - also great price (all handmade).

Very good for a stress free global visit to the medina, serious guide and listening to its customers.

Not recommended! I had booked this tour with my daughter. At the start of the tour (the two of us were) the guide said he had to leave for a while. We saw him pray in the big square. Back at our house, he rushed through the souks to the stores where he was, probably, commissioned. He has never asked which genre of stores we would like to visit or give explanations. We visited a total of 3 stores: 1 with oil, 1 with silverware and 1 with carpets. With the carpets I said that I am not interested in carpets, but we still had to go inside. There they showed us all the carpets for 45 minutes and asked: which one we liked and how much we wanted to pay for it. After having said several times that we really didn't need carpets, we finally left. Our guide, Mohammed, ran towards the main square. There he gave us a hand and said to write a good review and he was gone. The tour lasted a maximum of 1h15. Wasting time and money!
