Málaga is a world apart from the adjoining Costa del Sol: a historic and culturally rich provincial capital which has long lived in the shadow of the iconic Andalucian cities of Granada, Córdoba and Seville. Yet, it has rapidly emerged as the province's city of culture with its so-called 'mile of art' being compared to Madrid, and its dynamism and fine dining to Barcelona. Choose to go in Málaga, where you can visit sites such as La Alcazaba, Castillo de Gibralfaro or Alameda. 

La Alcazaba is Malaga's most important landmark, and overlooks the city from a hilltop inland. It is one of two Moorish fortresses in the city, the other being the Castillo de Gibralfaro, situated above. The Alcazaba is the best-preserved Moorish fortress palace in Spain. The people of Malaga are proud of the fact that Picasso was born here and it was a big day when the King and Queen of Spain inaugurated the Museo Picasso (Picasso Museum) on the 27th October 2003. The magnificent Castillo de Gibralfaro sits on a high hill overlooking Malaga city and port, and dates back to the 10th century. The image of Gibralfaro is well known: you can see it in both Malaga city and province's seal and flag. Malaga´s cathedral was built between 1528 and 1782 on or near the site of a former mosque. One of its most outstanding features on the inside are the choir stalls, with 42 sculptures carried out by Pedro de Mena, Ortiz de Vargas and Giuseppe Micael Alfaro, and the two organs, magnificent musical instruments that are rare examples of 18th century pieces that have over 4,000 pipes and are still in good working condition. Inside there is also a Cathedral Museum. A palm-lined extension of the Alameda, this park was created in the 1890s on land reclaimed from the sea. The garden along its southern side is full of exotic tropical plants and trees, making a pleasant refuge from the bustle of the city. Malaga's city park which runs alongside the "Paseo del Parque", was created at the end of the 19th century making use of land reclaimed from the sea. The park contains beautiful tropical flowering trees and shrubs. Many of the unusual and exotic species were brought from overseas, including Cuba, when Malaga was an important world trading centre.

Malaga's Botanical Garden is a tropical paradise of 250000 square metres, created in 1850. Around the year 1855, Jorge Loring and Amalia Heredia purchased some ranches situated to the north of Malaga where there were previously olive, almond and citrus fruit trees. Their plans began during a honeymoon, and due to their high purchasing power and their relation with European gardens, they brought back exotic plants from different countries all over the world.
