Full description
The Ponte 25 de Abril is known for having three names: Ponte Salazar (national statesman), Ponte sobre o Tejo and Ponte 25 de Abril (official name). The construction of the bridge was the responsibility of the United States Steel Export Company, the same company that built the Golden Gate Bridge in California.

The towers you can see are 190.5 meters high. The bridge was stress-tested using loaded trucks weighing a total of 1.500 tons. On August 6th 1966, when it was inaugurated, the Ponte 25 de Abril was considered the 50th largest suspension bridge in the world. The 1st stone of the Christ the King Statue was laid on December 18th 1949, and the statue was inaugurated 10 years later on May 17th 1959. The statue is 113 meters above the Rio Tejo, and is made of an 82-meter portico and a 28-meter statue. The statue of Cristo Rei was built as a pledge made by the Portuguese episcopate, asking God to deliver Portugal from World War II. The construction of the Cristo Rei statue involved 20 000 cubic meters of reinforced concrete. It weighs a total of 40 000 tons, and on a clear day offers views over a distance of 20 kilometers.

The customer can take their bus from our terminal stop at Marques de Pombal Square in Lisbon. The bus starts at Marques de Pombal Square and goes through the bridge, then stops at the monument of Christ the King before returning. It offers a panoramic view.
